Citrus sales brisk, prices rise ahead of Lunar New Year

Updated: 16:25, 12/02/2026

BAC NINH – Farmers in key citrus-growing areas in the northern province of Bac Ninh are racing to harvest the remaining orange and pomelo crops as demand strengthens and prices edge higher ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday.

Nguyen Thi Luat, a grower in Xe Cu residential quarter, Chu Ward, said her family is completing the harvest of sweet and red pomelos reserved for altar offerings during the upcoming Tet festival. Thanks to careful cultivation, the fruit has an attractive appearance and good quality, enabling sales at favorable prices.

Buyers select red pomelos at Nguyen Thi Luat’s orchard in Xe Cu residential area of Chu ward.

Sweet pomelos are currently sold at orchards for 25,000–30,000 VND (0.9 – 1.1 USD) per fruit, while red pomelos fetch 150,000–200,000 VND, up 5,000–10,000 VND per fruit from the same period last year, she said.

At Mia Market, a major fruit wholesale hub in Da Mai Ward, hundreds of tonnes of locally grown oranges and pomelos are delivered daily for distribution to traders inside and outside the province.

According to the provincial Sub-Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection under the Department of Agriculture and Environment, Bac Ninh has more than 8,100 hectares of citrus trees, including 5,400 hectares of pomelo, with the remainder planted with oranges, lemons and tangerines.

Nguyen Van Doanh in Ho Son 1 village of Bao Dai commune transports fruit to Mia Market for wider distribution.

This season, total citrus output is estimated at nearly 77,000 tonnes, including more than 48,660 tonnes of pomelo. Overall fruit quality is higher than in the 2024 crop, the agency said.

Sweet oranges are selling for 30,000–50,000 VND per kg, while sweet pomelos are priced at 10,000–25,000 VND per fruit, broadly in line with last year.
