Park's current contract will expire on January 31, 2022, but he has chosen to stay for one more year. His benefits will remain the same, including a monthly salary of over $50,000 post-tax.

Despite the four consecutive defeats in the final round of World Cup qualifiers, Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) still wants to extend the contract with Park. He had delayed the extension several times before making the final decision.

To help Park focus on his work with the national team, VFF will make some changes to the roles in the U23 team. Park will become a manager and the head coach position of the U23 team will be handed over to someone else.

Vietnam finished as the runner-up in AFC U23 Championship 2018, won the AFF Cup 2018 title, advanced to the quarterfinals of Asian Cup 2019, won the SEA Games gold medal and made it to the final round of World Cup qualifiers for the first time in history.

The success with Vietnam brought Park many financial benefits as well as attention in Asia. He has received offers to coach the national teams of Indonesia, Thailand and even South Korea. However, Park affirmed that he wants to stay in Vietnam.
