Coronavirus fears force Vietnamese football season to be postponed

Updated: 14:51, 04/02/2020
With fears surrounding the coronavirus (nCoV) outbreak the nation’s sporting schedule has been forced to change with the start of the V-League 1 season being delayed whilst the National Cup and Super Cup 2020 have also had their dates changed.

The move comes after the Vietnam Professional Football Company (VFP) made announcements on February 3 stating that they had two plans regarding the new kick off date for the latest V-League 1 season. Rather than the scheduled date of February 21, the start of the league will be moved to either February 29 or March 7, depending on developments with the nCoV situation.

In addition, the nCoV has also forced the VPF to postpone the date of the National Cup. Rather than being played on February 9 the fixture will now take place on either February 23 or April 3.

The Super Cup tie between V-League 1 champions Hanoi FC and National Cup runners-up Ho Chi Minh City FC will also be moved from February 7 to either February 21 or March 1.

At present, the spread of the deadly virus has infected over 17,000 people, killing 362 people in China in the process. It has currently spread to Vietnam where a total of nine cases have been discovered, thus forcing a delay to the start of the domestic football season.
