The Bluezone app is promoted on a bus in Tay Ninh Province.

The northern province of Hai Duong, another Covid-19 hotspot, witnessed an installation surge in the past several days and the ratio now stands at 22.4%, ranking fifth among provinces and cities in Vietnam.

In absolute numbers, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi recorded the largest numbers of installations, with both having more than 2.3 million users that have already downloaded the app to their smartphones.

According to the Authority of Information Technology Application, Bluezone had seen 19.7 million downloads on both the Android and iOS platforms on August 19, compared to just 200,000 on July 27 when the coronavirus re-emerged in Da Nang.

Bluezone was developed by technology firm Bkav in cooperation with the Ministry of Information and Technology and the Ministry of Health as a contact tracing app using the Bluetooth Low Energy technology.

On August 19, Bkav CEO Nguyen Tu Quang said that the app has helped in tracing nearly 1,400 close contacts with people infected with the coronavirus.
