Ensuring supply of farm produce in year- end
BAC GIANG- In order to keep the annual growth rate and ensure supply of farm produce before, during and after Lunar New Year, the agricultural sector in northern province of Bac Giang has made plan to direct production, calculate crops and guide farmers to implement proper livestock reproduction and adopt plant care and disease prevention methods.
According to the Sub-Department of Livestock and Animal Health (under the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development), farmers in the province are boosting livestock production especially pig and chicken to supply the market in year-end and Lunar New Year occasion. Lang Giang, Yen The, Tan Yen, Hiep Hoa, Viet Yen and Luc Nam are the districts having big demand for livestock breeds.

The prices of supplies especially animal feed are expected not to increase nor decrease until the end of this year. The increase in pork price due to high demand and loss of supply sources caused by Africa swine fever has led a surge in the prices of other livestock products, which will boost livestock reproduction to increase productivity in the last months of the year.
According to Le Van Duong, Director of the Sub-Department of Livestock and Animal Health, the provincial People’s Committee ordered the livestock sector to reach the target of 134,300 tonnes by the end this year with a focus on pig and poultry farming to maintain the growth rate.
A representative of Yen The district informed the local government defined hill-grazed chicken as the district’s key livestock while concentrating on developing a qualified large-scale commodity production area. The district will maintain the total flock of 4 million chickens from now to Lunar New Year. They planned to organise a promotional conference on consumption of chicken and other agricultural and forestry products in October.
Nguyen Van Vuong’s family in Xuan Moi village, Xuan Luong commune has started farming a flock of 4,000 hill-grazed chickens with a hope for high selling price on the New Year occasion.
“In order to protect the herds of livestock, I strictly follow bio-safety procedures and techniques with enough vaccination for chickens. The chickens are raised on the hills giving good quality meat”, said Vuong.
Binh Minh Organic Agricultural Cooperative in Nam Dong village, Danh Thang commune, Hiep Hoa district has signed contracts on pork consumption until year-end with some partners in Hanoi, Bac Ninh and Bac Giang city.
According to a representative of the cooperative, they are joining their farms with some other farms to raise over 10,000 organic pigs, a half of which will be sold at the end of this year. Facing complicated development of Africa swine fever epidemic, the cooperative attaches special importance to biosafety pig farming to protect the herds of livestock.
One of the measures proposed by the agricultural sector is to concentrate on exploiting potential plant and animal species. Currently, the Department is focusing on crop production and expanding cultivation area of the 2 key plants including good quality rice and vegetable of different varieties.
In order to ensure a large supply of farm produce ahead, during and after Lunar New Year, the Department directed its affiliated agencies and farmers to prepare for the winter crop and implement proper livestock reproduction. Besides, it is necessary to forecast occurrence and development of plant pests and diseases, especially in concentrated fruit and vegetable cultivation areas.
Apart from the above solutions, the agricultural sector has prepared plans, human resources, machinery, supplies and chemicals as well as provided training for related forces to response to epidemics and prevent the livestock from cold. In addition, this department has actively supported farmers in consumption of agricultural products especially the key plants, animals and short-day crops.
