Overcoming challenges

The Covid-19 outbreaks in the middle of 2021 and early 2022 in the province diversely affected the training and competition of the coaches and athletes. In almost 9 months, Bac Giang Gymnasium had been used as a field hospital for treatment of Covid-19 patients, thus the training face double difficulties.

According to Bui Ngoc Anh, Director of the provincial Center for Sports training and competition, leaders of the center paid special attention to coaching quality, from making coaching plans to training management and practice for competition. Sometimes, the coaches and athletes had to practice so hard during days and nights even weekends and holidays to prepare for the national, regional and international tournaments.

In 2022, the center sent several sport teams to compete at the national and international competitions and bagged 336 medals in total including 80 golds, 81 silvers and 175 bronzes. Badminton, chess, track and field, wrestling and stick pushing bagged most gold medals at the youth and national competitions.

Particularly, stick pushing, track and field and chess of Bac Giang have affirmed its “fame” in the sports arena, which are tough opponents for many sport teams at the national competitions. Especially at the SEA Games 31 held in May 2022, the athletes of Bac Giang won 8 medals (5 golds, 1 silver and 2 bronzes) at badminton, wushu, track and field and chess.

Track and field athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh bagged 3 gold medals, who broke the SEA Games records (at the 3,000-metre steeplechase category) and was selected one of the 4 best athletes at SEA Games 31 and awarded second-class labour medal by the State President.

At the 9th National Sports Games in 2022, Bac Giang’s sports team participated with more than 140 athletes at 12 out of 43 events and bagged 44 medals including 14 golds, 11 silvers and 19 bronzes. At this event, athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh won 4 gold medals at 3,000 metre, 5,000 metre, 1,500 metre and 10,000 metre steeplechase categories. Especially, she won the 10,000 metre steeplechase event with an achievement of 33 minutes, 13.23 seconds breaking the records of the National Sports Games in 2018 and 2021.

Making efforts for breakthroughs

Apart from well-known athletes competing at many national, regional and internationals sports games such as Nguyen Thi Oanh and Pham Tien San (track and field), Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy (wushu), Vo Thi Kim Phung, Nguyen Thi Mai Hung (chess) and Tran Thi Phuong Thuy (badminton), 2022 also marked other highlights when young athletes achieved commemorative medals at the national competitions. These are remarkable breakthroughs of Bac Giang’s high-achievement sports.

Particularly, Bac Giang won 5 gold medals at the National youth traditional wrestling championships. The outstanding young faces include Kieu Cong Tuyen, Ha Anh Hai, Duong Ngoc Lam, Nguyen Vu Nam and Mac Quang Huy.

Besides, Bac Giang delegation bagged 19 medals at the youth Chinese chess championships including 5 golds. Most of the young athletes aged from 9 to 15 attended the competition for the first time.

At the National badminton championships for young excellent players, Bac Giang delegation bagged 21 medals including 5 golds, ranking first overall position.

According to Nguyen Trong Bac, Vice Director of the, Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the department will implement many measures to improve quality of high-achievement sports. Of which, they will regularly check upon implementation of the tasks in sports development, the schemes, programmes and plans of the province and related units. Besides, they will pay attention to building and carrying out the planning for sports development while advising the province to promulgate the Scheme on development of high-achievement sports of Bac Giang province in 2023-2030 period.

Bac Giang bags two gold medals at National Sport Games

(BGO) - Athlete Hoang Thi Thu excellently won a gold medal at the women’s 51 kg category of stick pushing on December 13 afternoon at the provincial Sports Gymnasium. This is the first gold medal of Bac Giang team at the 9th National Sports Games.
