Phu Quoc plans $830M conference center for APEC 2027

Updated: 16:32, 18/11/2025

A conference center to be built in Phu Quoc at a cost of VND21.9 trillion (US$830 million) will host the 2027 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.

The People's Council of An Giang Province, where Vietnam's largest island is situated, approved its construction under the public–private partnership model last week.

It will have a convention and exhibition center, multipurpose theater and park.

The convention and exhibition center will have three floors and a basement and have a capacity sitting at least 6,500.

The theater will have six floors and a basement, and a capacity of around 4,000 seats.

It will be funded by a private investor to be finalized from a shortlist, and is expected to be completed by mid‑2027.

After the APEC summit, it will be used for cultural, art, sporting, and entertainment events and exhibitions.

An Giang has started construction of APEC-related projects in transportation, environmental protection, urban infrastructure, and technology.

They include the Phu Quoc metro line costing nearly VND9 trillion, Provincial Road 975, the Cua Can reservoir, an intelligent operations monitoring center, and a waste treatment plant.

The 2027 APEC Summit will mark a milestone reflecting Vietnam's standing in the region and also offer Phu Quoc an opportunity to become a global economic, social and trade hub, according to the government.

APEC, founded in 1989, has 21 members representing more than 50% of global GDP and having some 2.7 billion people, or 40% of the world's population.

China, Russia and the U.S. are its three largest members.

Its last summit took place last month in Gyeongju, South Korea. China will host the next summit.
