Quality over quantity: Bac Ninh's 2026 lychee season reaps record returns

Updated: 15:00, 08/07/2026

BAC NINH - Despite lower output due to unfavourable weather, Bac Ninh's 2026 lychee season is widely regarded as its most successful ever in terms of economic value. The result reflects coordinated efforts to improve production, strengthen quality control, expand markets, and modernise trade promotion, reinforcing the province's strategy of developing its signature fruit through a value-driven agricultural model.

While harvest volume was once considered the primary measure of a successful lychee season, Bac Ninh adopted a different approach this year by prioritising quality and value.

Although many lychee orchards suffer poor yields this year, several VietGAP-certified orchards in Kien Lao commune produce abundant, high-quality fruit.

At the start of the season, the provincial People's Committee launched a promotion plan linking lychee sale with agricultural production and tourism development.

The plan emphasised product quality, food safety, compliance with VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards, improved management of growing-area and packing-facility codes, and full product traceability.

To meet increasingly stringent export requirements, the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment implemented a range of coordinated measures.

During February and March 2026, authorities inspected, reviewed and classified all 243 registered growing-area codes, covering more than 16,703 hectares, along with 42 export-certified packing facilities, to ensure compliance with regulations.

A key innovation this season was the province's first-ever "Beautiful Lychee Orchard" competition. A total of 143 orchards across 15 communes and wards, covering more than 144 hectares, were recognised.

Beyond honouring exemplary growers, the programme promoted safe farming practices and encouraged producers to protect the reputation of local lychee.

Bui Van Quyen, a grower in Chay hamlet, Luc Ngan commune, whose 1.5-hectare orchard received the distinction, said that strict adherence to VietGAP standards enabled his family to sell its 13-tonne harvest at premium prices despite lower yields, generating nearly 1 billion VND (38,000 USD) in revenue.

If quality formed the foundation of this year's success, innovative marketing proved to be the breakthrough.

From the beginning of the harvest, the province intensified promotion through digital platforms while integrating trade promotion with media campaigns and experiential tourism.

The establishment of the Bac Ninh branch of the KOL and KOC Club introduced a new marketing approach, bringing the province's lychees closer to domestic and international consumers through livestream sales conducted directly from the orchards.

Notably, Vice Chairman of the provincial People's Committee Pham Van Thinh participated in the inaugural livestream session in Nam Duong commune, generating strong public interest.

Then, cooperatives, businesses, and farmers increasingly embraced digital platforms to promote and sell their products.

Canned lychees are processed for export at Vifoco Import-Export Joint Stock Company in Tien Phong Ward.

According to Thinh, the most significant achievement this season was that market prices finally reflected the premium quality of Bac Ninh's specialty fruit. For the first time, lychees from some orchards fetched as much as 300,000 VND (11.50 USD) per kilogramme.

Sales channels also evolved significantly. More traders signed purchase contracts before the harvest and collected fruit directly from orchards, while sales through integrated supply chains continued to increase.

Growers paid greater attention to packaging, branding, and product storytelling. Attractive gift boxes of premium lychees became increasingly common, helping elevate the value of the fruit.

By early July, Bac Ninh had harvested around 130,000 tonnes of lychees, including more than 50,000 tonnes of early-ripening fruit and about 80,000 tonnes from the main harvest, down from 2025 levels.

Nevertheless, consistently high prices pushed total revenue above 7.2 trillion VND, soaring 91% from the previous season's earnings. Supporting industries, including logistics and related services, generated an additional 1.5 trillion VND in revenue.
