Storm Talim weakens to tropical depression over southern China

Storm Talim weakened to a tropical depression over the southwest of China's Guangxi Province on Tuesday evening and is set to continue moving towards Vietnam with lower intensity.

The tropical depression was carrying winds of 49 kph at 5 p.m.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF), the depression will be moving west at 20 kph in the next hours and weaken to a low pressure zone over northeast Vietnam.

Quang Ninh, Lang Son and Cao Bang Provinces should expect strong winds and waves of 2-3 m on Tuesday night. The northeastern region is forecast to receive rainfall of 70-250 mm between Tuesday night and Wednesday, the northwestern region 50-150 mm, while Hanoi and nearby provinces 30-60 mm.

The storm had passed China's Leizhou Peninsula at 3 a.m. Tuesday with maximum winds of 117 kph.

It then weakened as it entered the coastal waters of Guangxi.

Talim is the first storm to form over Vietnamese waters this year. The meteorological center said that between July 11 and August 10 tropical convergence tends to be more active and stronger, leading to thunderstorms, tornadoes and high waves at sea.

It has forecast two or three tropical depressions and storms will form over the East Sea this year.
