Vietnam’s forward Huynh Nhu celebrates scoring their first goal during the SEA Games gold medal match against Myanmar in Cambodia on Monday evening.

Vietnam threatened to open the scoring after only two minutes with striker Huynh Nhu bursting down to take Tuyet Dung’s pass and firing a shot over the bar.

Myanmar then played better but suddenly conceded their first goal in the 11th minute due to a personal mistake by goalkeeper Mya Nyein.

The Myanmar goalie missed the ball and Tuyet Dung was present at the right time to deliver a pass to Huynh Nhu who comfortably slotted it into the empty net to put Vietnam in front.

After the goal, Vietnam played with greater confidence and created some more opportunities, but they could not widen their advantage before halftime.

The second half continued to see Vietnam play solidly and make it hard for Myanmar players to approach goalkeeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh’s goal area.

Myanmar’s hopes for a resurgence were put out in the 75th minute as Thanh Nha drove an unstoppable strike to seal a convincing 2-0 victory for Mai Duc Chung’s side.

With the victory, Vietnam made history as the first team to win the SEA Games gold medal for the fourth consecutive time. This was also the eighth time the Vietnamese team were crowned the SEA Games champions, three times more than archrivals Thailand.
