Vietnam exceeds gold medal target as Youth Olympics close in Argentina

The third Youth Olympic Games (YOG) officially wrapped up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on October 18, after 12 days of competition, with the Vietnamese contingent having surpassed the goal of winning at least one gold medal set prior to their departure.

With only 13 athletes competing in seven sporting events, Vietnam enjoyed its most successful YOG ever, claiming a total of two gold and one silver medal and standing in 26th place overall among more than 200 participating countries and territories.

Vietnamese swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang wins the men's 800m freestyle event at the 2018 YOG.

Weightlifter Ngo Son Dinh brought home the first gold medal for Vietnam at the 2018 YOG, after finishing triumphant in the men’s 56kg category with a lift of 114kg, before swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang added a second in the men’s 800m freestyle event with a time of 7:50.20, which broke his national record of 7:54.32.

Vietnam’s only silver medal was secured by weightlifter Nguyen Thi Thu Trang, who finished as runner-up in the women’s 44kg category, with a final lift of 147kg.

Addressing the closing ceremony, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, praised the organizational work and the animated sporting atmosphere across Argentina during the past few days. He also thanked the Buenos Aires citizens for having supported the athletes and showing their fanatical passion for sports.

The 2018 YOG took place in Buenos Aires from October 6 to 18, featuring over 4,000 competitors aged between 14-18 from 206 countries and territories worldwide.

The Russian delegation dominated the overall table with 28 gold, 18 silver, and 12 bronze medals, followed by China with 18 gold medals and Japan with 15 gold medals.

The host delegation, Argentina, showed significant progress, finishing in the sixth position with 26 medals, including 11 gold, six silver, and nine bronze medals.

The next edition of YOG will be hosted in Senegal in 2022.
