Vietnam lose 0-7 to the Netherlands in last World Cup match

Updated: 17:08, 01/08/2023
Vietnam officially wrapped up their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign with a 0-7 defeat against the Netherlands in their last Group E clash at New Zealand’s Forsyth Barr Stadium on August 1 afternoon.

Mai Duc Chung’s side headed into the match with strong determination, seeking to earn their first-ever World Cup goal after conceding two successive straight defeats against the United States and Portugal.

Danielle van de Donk scores as the Dutch go five goal ahead before halftime.

However, there was little thing they could do against the much-stronger Dutch side who were also highly determined to look for a win big enough they might need to surpass the USA on goal difference and make it to the knockout stage as group winners.

The Netherlands needed just eight minute to open the scoring as Lieke Martens-Van Leer chipped the ball over goalkeeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh after Dominique Janssen launched a long pass from defence into the Vietnamese penalty area.

Katja Snoeijs doubled the Dutch’s advantage by applying a clinical finish three minutes later.

Esmee Brugts and Jill Roord continued to prove their value in the Dutch squad as both were on target to fire the reigning World Cup runners-up four goals ahead in the next 12 minutes.

Shortly before the break, goalkeeper Kim Thanh made a fantastic save after Jill Roord’s initial shot, but there was nothing she could do about Danielle van de Donk’s follow up as the Dutch went into halftime with five goal in front.

It was the Netherlands who continued to dominate the second half, with Esmee Brugts and Jill Roord being the stars of the show.

Esmee Brugts completed her double three minutes before the hour mark with a stunning curling effort from outside the box, while Jill Roord got her second goal in the 83rd minute to seal a convincing 7-0 win for Andries Jonker’s side.

With the resounding victory, the Netherlands booked their place in the next round as Group E winners. They got seven points following two wins and one draw, two above the United States, who advanced as the group runners-up following their goalless tie with Portugal on the same day.

Vietnam left the tournament with three consecutive defeats and without scoring a single goal.
