Vietnam's fried bananas, banh cam doughnut make global 100 best sweets list

Updated: 16:21, 30/09/2025

Two Vietnamese favorites, banana fritters and mung bean-filled doughnuts, have made it to international food magazine TasteAtlas's list of world's best street food sweets.

TasteAtlas compiled a top 100 list from nearly 20,000 ratings last month, with about 14,000 deemed valid.

Banh cam doughnuts seen stacked at a street stall are known for their sesame crust.

Vietnam's fried bananas ranked 53rd.

The dish is made with chuoi xiem, a small and fragrant banana variety. The fruit is split lengthwise, pressed flat and dipped in a batter of rice and wheat flour blended with coconut milk or cream. Some cooks further enrich the mixture with honey or shredded coconut.

The fritters are crisp on the outside, soft inside, and topped with sesame seeds or a drizzle of coconut sauce.

At number 98 is banh cam, a fried doughnut. This round pastry is filled with mung bean paste and coated in sesame seeds. Made from rice and glutinous rice flour mixed with sugar, it is fried until crisp outside and soft inside.

Fried bananas are often wrapped in paper, fresh from the fryer.

Topping the list is Portugal's pastel de nata, an egg custard tart with a caramelized top, often sprinkled with cinnamon and paired with coffee.

In second place are France's crepes, thin wheat pancakes filled with sweet or savory toppings.

Turkey's dondurma, an ice cream made with mastic resin and salep flour, preventing it from melting, is in third.
