Young artist breathes folk soul into contemporary rhythms
BAC NINH - Amidst the vibrant wave of modern pop music, artist Tuan Cry (Nguyen Sy Tuan) has distilled the essence of Vietnam’s traditional music and infused it with contemporary flair to tell today’s stories. Born in 1992 in Tam Giang commune, Bac Ninh province, he is driven by a passion to "modernise without losing roots," bringing folk music closer to younger generations through creativity and a deep pride in the local culture.
A talented young artist
In early 2025, the Vietnamese music scene exploded with the release of the music video "Bac Bling" – a collaboration between composer Tuan Cry, singer Hoa Minzy, People's Artist Xuan Hinh, producer Masew, and director Nhu Dang.

"Bac Bling" became a global phenomenon, racking up hundreds of millions of views and soaring to the top of YouTube’s Trending list within days of its release.
Taking on both the roles of composer and performer, Tuan Cry boldly experimented with combining various genres. "Bac Bling" delighted listeners by blending rap, xam (a traditional form of folk music), cheo (a traditional opera), and quan ho (love duet singing) in a harmonious fusion of youthful energy and Vietnamese cultural essence.
In recent years, Tuan Cry has become known as a young artist who is passionate about telling stories through folk music. His journey began with the song “Moi trau” (2023), which garnered over 21 million views on YouTube.
He has continued to make his mark on charts with hits like "Giai dieu Viet Nam minh," "Ken ca chon canh," "Lay Co," and "Cam ky thi hoa." Each of his songs captures the vibrancy of Vietnamese life, merging traditional melodies with modern production techniques.

He said that folk music is not old-fashioned; it just needs to be approached in a different way – more youthful and creative – that is relatable to younger audiences. For him, his artistic journey is a continuous effort to create, produce, perform, and share the beauty of folk culture with the younger generation.
After the success of "Bac Bling," Tuan Cry has continued to work on several art projects that highlight and promote the beauty of his homeland. One such project, the song "Kinh Bac," celebrates the image and aspirations of Bac Ninh in the new era.
Beyond his musical endeavors, he is deeply involved in community activities. He frequently engages with students, sharing his passion and inspiring love for folk music.
He also actively participates in initiatives to promote cultural heritage, including teaching quan ho singing to children, joining summer campaigns with the youth union in Bac Ninh, and appearing in the "Inspirational Figures" programme by the national media.
In addition to his artistic contributions, Tuan Cry is a strong advocate for social causes. He is involved in the "Khong mot minh" (Not Alone) campaign, encouraging young people to build a safe and humane cyberspace.
He also participates in blood donation drives, contributes to the "Mai am gia dinh Viet" (Vietnamese Family Shelter), and assists with cooking and cleaning for communities affected by natural disasters.
For his meaningful actions and outstanding contributions to promoting cultural heritage and tourism, Tuan Cry was awarded certificates of merit from the Chairman of the provincial People's Committee and the provincial Youth Union. Recently, he was also recognised at the provincial Patriotic Emulation Congress for the 2020-2025 period.
Tuan Cry shared that he is working on several new projects related to his hometown. "I will continue to study and delve deeper into our national culture to spread these good values to a wider audience, both in Vietnam and internationally," he said.
