Attended the event were Le Anh Duong, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee and head of the provincial steering committee for mobilizing blood donation, representatives from the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT) and numerous officials and people across Bac Giang city.

The annual Red Spring Festival aims to ensure the source of safe blood over the traditional Lunar New Year. This year, the event will run until March 15 to encourage the involvement of people from all social strata in the humanitarian activity and promote the operational efficiency of blood donation clubs. It aims to receive around 3,500 units of blood.

In recent years, the provincial steering committee for mobilising blood donation has selected the Red Sunday as a kick-start for the Red Spring Festival, which was carried out from 2009 by the Tien Phong newspaper, the National Committee on Traffic Safety, the NIHBT, and the steering committees of mobilising blood donation from cities and provinces.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Le Anh Duong underlined the humanitarian meaning of the campaign that was launched in the province from 2004 with remarkable achievements. In 2017, the locality received over 18,100 blood units and recorded the participation of 1.15 percent of the local population in the drive.

He said the blood demand for treatment will increase before, during and after Tet holiday. Therefore, the Red Cross societies all level under the provincial steering committee for mobilizing blood donation need to strengthen communication campaigns to raise public awareness of the issue while proactively coordinating with the health sector to build plans for safe and effective blood reception and encourage agencies, businesses, and individuals to sponsor blood donation activities.

On the occasion, the Tien Phong newspaper presented memorial cups to units coordinating to organise the Red Sunday 2018. The provincial Red Cross Society honoured sponsors for the event.

After the ceremony, volunteers from the local blood donation clubs marched along the main road axis of Bac Giang city to call for blood donation. The festival attracted over 800 officials, youth unionists and people in the province. The organising board received 663 safe blood units and transferred to the NIHBT in service of medical treatment.
