Bac Giang: Young farmers supported to get rich

Updated: 20:04, 31/03/2021
(BGO) - While many young laborers in rural areas find and choose jobs in industrial zones and clusters or in urban areas, many young people set up their career in their hometown. They have succeeded thanks to their will and efforts, along with the companionship and support of the Farmers’ Unions at all levels.

Getting rich in the homeland

We visited the family of Nguyen Dang Tuyen (born in 1991) in Trai Quan village, Dong Hung commune (Luc Nam district). From a distance, we saw a large 3-storey house built with modern architecture. Behind the house and around the 1,500sq.m breeding farm is a fish pond, creating a lively picture. In 2015, Tuyen got a loan of 100 million VND (4,300 USD) from the communal farmer support fund under the guarantee of the communal Farmers’ Union to invest in production.

With this capital, Tuyen built four stables, each 25sq.m wide, and bought 40 breeding pigs. After the first two batches, seeing the model prove effective, the communal People's Committee helped him obtain additional loans worth 150 million VND (6,500 USD) from the Luc Nam branch of the Vietnam Bank for Social Policies and the Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development to expand production. At the same time, it created favorable conditions for him to participate in short-term vocational training courses on animal husbandry, veterinary medicine and aquaculture. He applied the knowledge learned in production and has become successful. Currently, each year, his family sells from 700-1,000 porkers; and raises 100 sows with about 2,000 breeding pigs sold each year. In addition, he also farms fish on an area of 2.7 ha of water surface, creating regular jobs for 10 workers. His family earns an average revenue of more than 3 billion VND (130,000 USD) per year.

Unlike Tuyen, when he graduated from the Ngo Gia Tu Bac Giang College, Vu The Anh (born in 1990) in Ngoc Yen Ngoai village, Cao Xa commune (Tan Yen district) could not apply for a job suitable to his major so he did a lot of different jobs. In 2015, thanks to the support of the communal Farmers’ Union, relatives and friends with loans and vocational training, The Anh now owns a model of breeding cows, pigs, poultry and fish, in combination with growing grapefruit, generating an income of more than 450 million VND (19,500 USD) per year.

“In addition to developing the household economy, we have also encouraged young members to build models linking production and consumption such as professional associations, towards establishing cooperatives, while supporting product branding for sustainable development,” said Nguyen Van Nguon, Vice Chairman of the provincial Farmers’ Union.

Along with the households of Nguyen Dang Tuyen and Vu The Anh, Bac Giang also has thousands of young farmer households earning high income thanks to the development of agricultural economy. For example, the household of Ong The Dung (born in 1994) in Dong Hung commune (Luc Nam district) specializes in producing cordyceps, earning more than 2.5 billion VND (108,300 USD) in revenue per year. The pigeon raising model of Vi Van Vit in Doc Mung village, Giap Son commune (Luc Ngan district) generates more than 400 million VND (17,330 USD) annually.

Attracting young members

Bac Giang currently has nearly 107,500 good business households at all levels, including tens of thousands of youngster-led households. According to Chairwoman of the Luc Nam district Farmers’ Union Ngo Thi Ngoc Linh, to attract young workers to agricultural development together with launching the good business and production movement, the district Farmers’ Union has also increased services supporting young members to develop production, such as giving loans and organizing many vocational classes in agriculture, engineering and services...

According to Vice Chairman of the provincial Farmers’ Union Nguyen Van Nguon, recently, many young farmer members have left the hometown to work in industrial zones and clusters. In order to keep them in the countryside to develop family economy and build up the homeland, the provincial Farmers’ Union has deployed specific models such as gardening, animal husbandry and provision of services... In addition, the union has also based on the needs and aspirations of young members to provide vocational training support.

Determining youngsters as dynamic people, the Standing Committee of the provincial Farmers’ Union has encouraged them to choose suitable economic models. In addition to supporting young members with loans, the committee has outlined specific projects, focusing on developing models of cooperative groups and cooperatives, coupled with support services in obtaining loans, vocational training, science and technology transfer, deferred payment of fertilizer, bringing new varieties into intensive farming, in order to help members expand production.
