Updated: 15:13, 19/10/2026

BAC NINH – The 800th anniversary of Prince Ly Long Tuong’s arrival in Goryeo (Korea) (1226–2026) offers an opportunity to reflect on a historic milestone in Vietnam–RoK relations while promoting cooperation between Bac Ninh city and Bonghwa county, North Gyeongsang province in heritage preservation, cultural exchanges, education, workforce training and tourism development.

From October 15 to 18, a delegation of the Bac Ninh People’s Council, led by its Vice Chairman Nghiem Xuan Huong, visited Bonghwa and attended a Vietnam–Republic of Korea global exchange event commemorating the 800th anniversary of Prince Ly Long Tuong’s settlement in Korea.

In 1226, Prince Ly Long Tuong, a descendant of Vietnam’s Ly Dynasty, left his homeland in the Kinh Bac region with his family, crossed the sea to Goryeo and settled on the Korean Peninsula.

Over eight centuries, his descendants from the Ly Hoa Son clan have preserved their ancestral heritage, forging an enduring historical link between Vietnam and the RoK.

For Bac Ninh, the anniversary provides an opportunity to promote Kinh Bac heritage, strengthen cultural exchanges and expand cooperation with Korean localities on the basis of shared history.

On October 17, the Vietnam–RoK global exchange event marking the 800th anniversary of Prince Ly Long Tuong’s settlement in Korea took place at Chunghyodang historic site in Bonghwa county, North Gyeongsang province.

The event brought together representatives of the two countries’ authorities, descendants of the Ly Hoa Son clan and a large number of Vietnamese living in the RoK.

Participants included Vietnamese Ambassador to the RoK Vu Ho, Nghiem Xuan Huong and representatives of Vietnamese agencies and localities.

RoK attendees included Yang Geum-hee, Vice Governor of North Gyeongsang province, and Bonghwa county Governor Choi Ki-young, along with local government representatives.

Speaking at the event, Huong described the 800-year milestone as a symbol of Vietnam–RoK friendship, contributing to stronger cooperation between Bac Ninh city, North Gyeongsang province and Bonghwa county.

He expressed appreciation for the local authorities’ warm reception and for the efforts of successive generations of the Ly Hoa Son clan to preserve their ancestral heritage.

Choi, for his part, highlighted the significance of the historical ties between the two countries, describing Prince Ly Long Tuong’s journey as a precious connection passed down through generations.

The event also created further opportunities to expand exchanges and strengthen friendship between the two peoples.

Cultural performances showcased the distinctive identities of both countries. Artists from Bac Ninh’s Cheo traditional opera and Quan Ho folk singing theatres performed Quan Ho songs, introducing Kinh Bac’s cultural heritage to RoK audiences.

Children from multicultural Vietnamese–Korean families also performed the two countries’ national anthems, providing a highlight of the exchange programme.

During working sessions, Huong affirmed that Bac Ninh’s leadership would direct relevant agencies and units to coordinate with Bonghwa authorities to translate cooperation orientations into practical and effective initiatives.

Implementation will be further developed through exchanges between agencies and organisations on both sides, in line with each locality’s circumstances and needs.

Building on the 800-year historical milestone, Bac Ninh city and Bonghwa county have a stronger foundation for expanding exchanges and cooperation, incorporating heritage values into cultural, educational and tourism activities and workforce training, thereby contributing to stronger Vietnam–RoK friendship.
