Bac Ninh raises farm produce value through linked production and sales

Updated: 14:49, 16/02/2026

BAC NINH - Local authorities and agricultural cooperatives in the northern province of Bac Ninh have been building integrated chains from production to processing and sales, a drive that officials say is lifting the value and export potential of the province’s farm produce.

In recent years, firms and cooperatives have widened raw material zones, adopted higher quality standards and expanded deep-processing capacity to move crops up the value chain and open new domestic and overseas markets.

Frozen lychees are sold at Lopia Supermarket in Saitama prefecture of Japan.

Hong Xuan Agricultural Service Cooperative in Chu ward has been at the forefront, producing and supplying planting materials, livestock and agronomic services.

The cooperative adopted safe-production protocols and grows lychee to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards for export and sale to supermarkets and clean-food retailers.

“Since our founding we have focused on applying science and technology to production,” said Pham Van Dung, Director of the Cooperative. “We follow good agricultural practices for lychee, orange and pomelo to ensure safe, high-quality products that meet rising demand at home and abroad.”

The cooperative’s Luc Ngan lychee holds a five-star OCOP rating, while its oranges and pomelos meet three-star OCOP standards, and the unit exports to markets including China, the United States, Japan and Europe.

Provincial statistics show Bac Ninh has more than 54,000 hectares of fruit trees, led by lychee, longan, pomelo, orange, custard apple and apple, with an annual production value of about 7.4 trillion VND (285 million USD) per year.

In addition, localities cultivate more than 30,000 hectares of annual crops such as corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes and leafy vegetables, yielding nearly 630,000 tonnes and generating roughly 3.6 trillion VND per year.

The province now maintains 310 registered growing-area codes covering some 5,000 hectares and is developing high-quality raw-material zones to supply processing plants, officials said.

Nguyen Hong Quang, Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, said the sector has prioritised smart production, new-technology adoption, organic farming and circular agriculture to meet export standards and increase product value.

“Alongside support for firms, cooperatives and family households to build links from production to consumption, we are directing investment into intelligent farming and technologies that guarantee product quality,” Quang said.

Provincial industry and trade authorities have concentrated on branding, traceability, trade promotion and e-commerce development to expand export markets.

In 2025, Bac Ninh’s agricultural products were promoted and sold in 16 countries and territories, with key markets including China, Japan, the United States and several European countries.

Lychee has become a flagship product. In 2025 the province exported more than 80,000 tonnes of lychee, contributing to an estimated harvest revenue of more than 6 trillion VND.

A bumper harvest.

Other crops, including longan, oranges, pomelo, tomato, radish, chilli, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, star anise and lemongrass, also reached export markets.

Local processors say linking farmers to processors and buyers stabilises supply and boosts the income of smallholders, while scaling up processing capacity increases the shelf life and exportability of perishable goods.

Industry players pointed to practical steps that have helped raise value: certificated planting areas for traceability; investment in post-harvest preservation; facility upgrades to meet overseas phytosanitary rules; and cooperative-led aggregation to reduce transaction costs and improve negotiation power with buyers.

Officials said the push to add value is not only lifting farmers’ incomes but also creating prospects for a more sustainable agricultural sector that contributes to the province’s overall export growth.
