Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam gets his second shot of Nonacovax as part of its human trials in Hanoi, March 26, 2021. |
Do Quyet, director of the Military Medical University, said the second phase aims at assessing the safety and efficacy of antibody generating and its antiviral ability. Those criteria were ensured in the first phase.
"Nanocovax is effective against the U.K variant", he said.
The university plans to submit an application in July to the Research Ethics Committee under the Health Ministry for the vaccine, produced by Nanogen Pharmaceutical Biotechnology Company, to be granted permission for being used widely.
According to Quyet, Vietnam can compare the efficacy of Nanocovax to AstraZeneca, which was approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), to be internationally licensed if it is similar.
Therefore, the third phase is scheduled to be implemented with 5,000 volunteers.
"I am confident that Vietnam will have a commercial vaccine at the end of September."
On March 24, UNICEF announced due to production delays of Covid-19 vaccine distributed through Covax, the projected deliveries to all countries had to be delayed.
Vietnam is now due to receive the first 811,200 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine via Covax next month, instead of March 25 as earlier planned. This quantity is smaller than previously announced for the first shipment and based on an equitable pro-rata distribution of available doses between all participant countries.
Based on initial information shared bu the manufacturer, the plan remains to deliver a total of 4,176,000 doses to Vietnam by the end of May, pending operations and supply constraints.
