Diversifying wood products to enhance competitiveness

(BGO) – The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development on August 8 organized a seminar on opportunities and challenges of wood processing and exporting wood products in the northern province of Bac Giang. 

Bac Giang is home to about 80,000 hectares of planted forest. Annually, the province exploits and plants more than 8,000 hectares with an output of over 600,000 cubic meters (mostly acacia and eucalyptus wood). The export value hit some 1 trillion VND (43.2 million USD) in the first 6 months of 2019.

The seminar draws dozens of enterprises, wood processing facilities and forest owners in Bac Giang province.

There are 771 forestry processing and trading facilities in the province. Most of the input material are from the planted forest and import wood. The majority of finished products are civil carpentry, piece wood, board, plywood among others.

In spite of a large area of planted forest, most of the wood processing facilities are established individually with scattered scale which do not have modern technology to produce the high value products for export.

At the seminar, representatives of Department of Science, Technology and International Cooperation, Department of Agriculture Production, Vietnam Administration of Forestry introduced about the Voluntary Partnership Agreements (VPA) on the legally compulsory trade to improve the forest management and boost up the legal wood trading from Vietnam to European as well as the national forestry certification system. Besides, they shared the opportunities and challenges that the wood processing sector in Vietnam are dealing with.

The comments expected the provincial functional authorities, Vietnam Administration of Forestry to facilitate and consult the forest owners and enterprises in implementing the procedure to applying for the sustainable forestry certificate. The province was urged to early establish the Association of Forestry Product Processing to link, support and accelerate the local wood processing development.

Concluding at the seminar on behalf of the agriculture sector Head of the provincial Forestry Department Ha Minh Quy received all the comments and suggestion. He said the governmental managing authorities will take great effort on improving the business and investment environment.

The wood processing establishments should link with the forest owners to ensure the legal material source; stabilise the export of legal wood products to the global markets; coordinate with the forest owner to prepare the document for the sustainable forest management certificate so as to have the the supply source of raw wood material.

2018 a successful year for wood industry
2018 was a successful year for the wood industry, with the export of wood products earning the country over 8.9 billion USD (not including non-wood forestry products), up 14.5 percent from the previous year.
