The locals in Suoi Van villae, Nghia Phuong commune harvest the custard apples.

According to Director of Luc Nam Custard Apple Production Cooperative Bui Van Quang said now 15 member households in the Cooperative produce more than 15ha of custard apple.

The unfavourable weather condition made this year productivity down 20 percent comparing to last year crop. The selling price fluctuates from 22 – 35,000 VND (0.95 – 1.51 USD) per kg at the peak harvest season.

In 2014, the NOIPV granted the Certificate of Collective Brand Registration “Luc Nam custard apple”. To develop the trademark, Luc Nam district has applied various solutions to support the farmers in production procedure, package, label, stamp for origin traceability...since 2014. In July 2020, the NOIPV issued GI Certificate to the fruit.

Head of the district Division of Agriculture and Rural Development Vu Van Son informed that the GI Certificate issuance helps Luc Nam custard apple protect the product origin and quality as well as enhance the commodity value in domestic market, promote the export to foreign countries with advantages in product introduction.

Value increase

As of July 2020, the NOIPV (Ministry of Sciene and Technology) provided GI protection to 84 farm produce in Vietnam, including 2 products of Luc Ngan lychee and Luc Nam custard apple in Bac Giang province.

The farmers in Huyen Son commune (Luc Nam district) apply technology of pruning and pollination to improve the custard apple’s productivity and quality.

The NOIPV’ statistic proved that with the GI protection, the selling price of the products increase 10 – 15 percent or 3.5 times to some products such as Luan Van pomelo, Cao Phong orange, Luc Ngan lychee...

GI is not only meaningful in term of commodity origin but also brings added value to the producer, helps enterprises and localities prevent fake and low quality products while contributing to promoting the local products and drawing visitors.

Luc Nam now develops more than 1,700 ha of custard apples including over 100 ha granted with VietGAP standard and 1,050 ha growing the fruit under VietGAP procedure.

More than 87 percent of the custard apple growing areas in the district are extended with pollination technique, helping improve the productivity, quality, value and prolong the harvest time from July to December.

Most of the concentrated custard apple cultivation areas area Huyen Son, Cuong Son, Nghia Phuong, Dong Phu, Dong Hung and Lan Mau communes. In the upcoming time, the district will further support the registration of product origin traceability. Now, QR Code is granted to 100 ha of custard apple in Nghia Phuong Custard Apple Cooperative and 35 ha of Luc Nam Custard Apple Cooperative.

Vice Chairman of Luc Nam district People’s Committee Luong The Tuan said: “The district will organize a ceremony to announce the GI and introduce the local fruits while supporting the cooperatives to make product label and package. The communes are encouraged to remain stable area, enhance the application of VietGAP caring technique to improve the product quality as well as establish cooperative and working group to share information, intensive cultivation technique and linkage of product consumption”.
