Addressing the opening ceremony, Vice Chairman of Hung Yen Provincial People’s Committee Bui The Cu emphasised that the festival is an annual event held by the province at the beginning of the longan harvest in a bid to promote the local fruit to localities across the country and the world market.

The festival features 50 pavilions displaying longan and other typical agricultural products of Hung Yen Province.

The event also gathered various varieties of longan trees that are being duplicated in the districts of Khoai Chau, An Thi, Kim Dong, Phu Cu and Tien Lu as well as Hung Yen City.

It is also expected to bring high-quality fruit to consumers while encouraging cooperatives and farmers to perform the farming under VietGAP standards to preserve and promote the Hung Yen longan brand, Cu noted.

The three-day festival will conclude on August 2 with various activities including a poll for the most delicious longan in 2020 and other trade promotion activities.

Hung Yen longan rank 13th out of the 50 most famous fruits in Vietnam and are recognised as the best fruit by the Vietnam Book of Records. Hung Yen longan are also granted with trademark protection certification and geographical indications by the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam.

Hung Yen expects to harvest 50,000 tonnes of longan in this crop.

*On the same day, the Hung Yen Provincial People’s Committee held a conference to connect supply and demand for longan and agricultural products in the province in 2020 to consolidate the domestic market and expand the export market of local agricultural products.

At the event, nearly 20 enterprises including Chinese enterprises signed deals with local cooperatives to consume 25,000 tonnes of longan, equivalent to 50% of the total estimated volume in 2020.

Despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the northern province of Son La has effectively boosted the consumption and export of mango. The longan harvest season has just begun in the province and is expected to be bustling with various promotional events.
