Japan–Bac Ninh investment ties mark strong growth
BAC NINH - More than five decades after Vietnam and Japan established diplomatic relations, the two countries have evolved into a comprehensive strategic partnership marked by deep and effective cooperation. With its outstanding advantages, Bac Ninh has emerged as one of the most attractive destinations for Japanese investors, drawing 126 projects with total registered capital of around 2.06 billion USD, placing Japan among the province’s top five foreign investors.
Japanese investment in Bac Ninh is concentrated in manufacturing and processing, including precision engineering, mold production, automotive components, electrical equipment, and supporting industries.

Notable projects include Canon (130 million USD), Seiki (126 million USD), Hanacans (114.4 million USD), Nippon Zoki (90 million USD), Nitto (66 million USD), Foster Electric (55 million USD), Sumitomo (53 million USD), Tenma (51.56 million USD), and THK (50 million USD).
According to Tran Son Tung, deputy head of the Bac Ninh Industrial Parks Authority, the presence of Japanese and other foreign-invested companies has helped transform Bac Ninh into the leading electronics manufacturing and export hub in northern Vietnam.
Japanese enterprises contribute roughly 22% of Bac Ninh’s domestic corporate tax revenue and employ more than 31,000 workers, 71% of whom are local.
Canon Vietnam alone hires nearly 10,000 workers and has built a network of over 50 local parts and materials suppliers. Foster Electric employs more than 3,000 workers and has maintained average annual growth of nearly 20%.
Beyond processing and manufacturing, Japanese businesses have invested in many other fields to create an ecosystem in Bac Ninh.
A notable recent project is Aeon Mall Vietnam’s commercial and office-tourism centre in Tan Tien ward, covering more than 76,000 square meters with nearly 4 trillion VND (151.73 million USD) in investment.
In agriculture, Bac Ninh’s Luc Ngan lychee has received geographical indication protection in Japan, with the province preparing conditions for obtaining planting area and packing facility codes for export.
In environmental technology, Thuan Thanh Environment JSC (Vietnam) and JFE Engineering (Japan) are jointly developing a high-tech waste-to-energy plant worth 58 million USD in Song Lieu ward.
Japanese investors consistently rate Bac Ninh as an appealing destination thanks to its reliable power, water, transport, logistics infrastructure, as well as supporting facilities such as housing for experts and workers.
Local authorities are known for rapid administrative support and willingness to coordinate with service providers to meet investor needs efficiently.
Aiming to become a centrally governed city before 2030 under a green, smart, and sustainable development model, Bac Ninh is prioritising future investment in high-tech sectors such as semiconductors, chip manufacturing, information technology, pharmaceuticals, health care, biotechnology, and renewable energy equipment.
Phan The Tuan, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, reaffirmed Bac Ninh’s commitment to maintaining a transparent, stable, and business-friendly environment by accelerating administrative reform and reducing processing time and costs.
“The province stands ready to listen and work alongside investors 24/7 to promptly resolve any challenges,” he said.
