According to Dao Van Hien, Vice Chairman of the communal People's Committee, the commune currently has 250 hectares of onion, 180 hectares of potato and nearly 100 hectares of other short-term crops.
Realizing that market demand for processed farm produce is increasing, this year locals have expanded the areas for growing winter crops. With nearly 550 hectares of processed and safe vegetables, the revenue is estimated at 93 billion VND (3.82 million USD), an increase of over 10 billion VND from last year.
Previously, on agricultural and hill land, people in Huyen Son commune mainly grew rice and corn, with low economic efficiency. Now the commune has shifted to growing valuable winter crops. With more than 150 hectares of custard apple, the whole commune earns about 35 billion VND each year. Bao Son commune, in addition to the pineapple area of 170 hectares, in recent years, has planted peach trees (40 hectares) and guava (40 hectares), earning tens of billions of dong in revenue each year.
Duong Cong Dinh, Vice Chairman of the district People's Committee, said that concentrated agricultural production is the policy and motivation for the district to restructure the agricultural sector associated with building new-style rural areas.
Concretizing the Resolution of the district Party Congress, the district Party Committee has issued a plan to develop commodity agricultural production applying high technology, focusing on building and developing brands, especially for key One Commune One Product (OCOP) products.
From the above orientation, the local authorities have transformed from small-scale production to large-scale concentrated commodity development. With more than 2,100 hectares of agricultural land after land gathering and exchange, the district has built 33 large-scale fields and 38 high-tech application models. Thanks to that, the production scale of some strong crops has increased rapidly, forming key commodity production areas according to planning and the advantages of each commune.
According to the Division of Agriculture and Rural Development of Luc Nam district, the district currently grows more than 1,500 hectares of custard apple, with an output of more than 14,000 tonnes per year, and annual revenue of over 400 billion VND (16.44 million USD), ranking first in the province in terms of area and output.
Besides, Luc Nam has also formed longan growing areas spanning 750 hectares; pineapple areas covering more than 400 hectares; and 13 specialized vegetable production areas on nearly 3,000 hectares. Agricultural products not only serve domestic consumption but also target exports.
In order to expand the area of concentrated agricultural production, the district has encouraged forms of linkage to form closed and sustainable circles; paid attention to supporting cooperatives and developing a number of key local products; provided training to improve management and brand building skills; and facilitated access to credit.
To continue improving the value of agricultural production, Luc Nam district will focus on forms of production organization, especially agricultural cooperatives; encourage land accumulation, subleasing of land from farmers or investment in the agricultural sector to form concentrated production areas under value chains.
The province will support the expansion and development of new high-tech application models, and promote key and signature products under the OCOP programme associated with branding.
