Northern Power Corporation energises first battery energy storage system in Bac Ninh
BAC NINH - Northern Power Corporation under Vietnam Electricity (EVNNPC) has successfully energised its first battery energy storage system (BESS), marking a milestone in deploying grid-scale energy storage across northern Vietnam.
The system was commissioned at the 110-kV Song Khe substation in Bac Ninh province on the evening of August 2. The project was implemented by EVNNPC's Northern Power Project Management Board in coordination with Bac Ninh Power Company and related units.

It is the first facility to enter commercial operation under EVNNPC's programme to install battery energy storage systems at 110-kV substations.
The Song Khe BESS has a capacity of 5 MW/10 MWh and includes battery storage units, power conversion systems, transformers, RMU switchgear, power cables and integrated protection, control, monitoring and fire prevention systems.
The facility is connected to a remote control centre, enabling centralised monitoring and operation of the substation.
Under its operating model, the system stores electricity during periods of low demand and discharges power back to the grid during peak hours, helping improve grid stability and efficiency.
Before commissioning, all equipment underwent testing and safety assessments to ensure compliance with technical requirements. Construction began on June 8, 2026, and the system was officially energised at 8:50 p.m. on August 2, operating stably in line with its design specifications.
During the first phase of the programme, EVNNPC plans to deploy six BESS installations at 110-kV substations in Bac Ninh, including Yen Phong 4, Doi Coc, Duc Thang, Song Khe, Lang Giang and Yen Phong 3. Most projects will have a capacity of 5 MW/10 MWh, while the Duc Thang substation will be equipped with a larger 10 MW/20 MWh system.
