This year festival brought together more than 500 artisans, amateur actors, actresses and instrumentalists from 12 cheo clubs in the communes and wards of Bac Giang, Nenh, Canh Thuy, Yen Dung, Song Lieu, Tien Phong, Bao Dai, Nghia Phuong, Quang Trung, Dong Viet and Phuc Hoa.

These clubs are the backbone of cheo singing movement in the province, which have been assisted by Bac Ninh Cheo Theatre to revive and maintain regular activities in the 2025-2025 period.

According to the Organizing Committee’s requirements, each troupe shall present a competition program lasting from 25 to 50 minutes, including traditional cheo excerpts and melodies.

The festival lasted until December 7. The Organising Committee awarded prizes for outstanding troupes, plays and excerpts as well as individual prizes for actors and actresses with good performances.

The festival is aimed at evaluating quality of cheo singing and performances in the province while effectively implementing the projects to support revival and establishment of amateur cheo clubs at grassroots level.

The event contributes to preserving and promoting values of cheo art, a unique folk theatre genre which has been long associated with the cultural and spiritual life of the people in Bac Ninh and in northern delta region.

It is also a playground for the clubs to exchange, learn experiences and improve quality of the community-based arts movement.

Cheo Festival 2025 opens in Bac Ninh province, honoring quintessence of traditional art

BAC NINH – The 2025 National Cheo Festival officially opened on October 20 at the Bac Ninh provincial Cultural and Exhibition Center in Bac Giang ward. The event is jointly organized by the Department of Performing Arts under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Bac Ninh Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Vietnam Stage Artists Association.
