Stories of journalists in Covid-19 epicenter

Updated: 21:49, 21/06/2021
(BGO) - The Covid-19 epidemic has been affecting all aspects of social life, including journalists. Despite difficulties in quarantine conditions, many reporters of Bac Giang Newspaper have still made efforts to overcome difficulties and well perform the "dual tasks” of preventing the pandemic for themselves and the community and doing their information work.

Reporter Dinh Huu Trinh (Party Building - Internal Affairs Department): Turning difficulties into advantages

On May 18, the Chairman of the provincial People's Committee decided to impose strict social distancing in Viet Yen district. Like other localities, in Tang Tien commune - where my family lives, the houses were closed, and the people strictly abided by the regulations on pandemic prevention. However, that difficulty became an advantage for me to firmly grasp the information and regularly have works to send to the editorial board.

The day for the elections of deputies to the 15th National Assembly and People's Councis at all levels for the 2021-2026 tenure in the epicenter was very special. Reporters, if standing outside, could not witness the election teams riding bicycles to carry ballot boxes to each alley and each household. Seizing the opportunity, I closely followed the developments and recorded real images showing the efforts of the members of the election teams. I also reported the images featuring the solidarity of the people when sharing every kilogram of rice and vegetables with workers staying in boarding houses; army officers and soldiers, police, and health staff working on duty day and night despite rain or sunshine. Working in the epicenter gave me valuable experiences and unforgettable memories.

Reporter Dao Van Vinh (Economics Department): Going to the watch hut to self-quarantine

That day, I and a colleague were assigned to attend and report on a conference to implement election tasks at the Son Dong district People's Committee Hall. While collecting information and taking photos, I received information that there was a Covid-19 infection in Yen Dinh commune.

As soon as we verified the information, we reported it to our newspaper and then voluntarily self-quarantined at home. I have two small children, because I did not know if I had close contact with people at risk of Covid-19 infection, I decided to go straight to the watch hut at my family's fish pond in Tan My commune (Bac Giang city) to self-quarantine for 14 days. This was also a time for me to quietly work and prepare for the next week when the quarantine period is over.

Reporter Dang Hoai Thu (Culture - Society Department): Timely connecting collaborators

On the afternoon of May 9, the Phu My residential area, Dinh Ke ward (Bac Giang city) - where my family resides, was locked down due to a case of Covid-19 infection. I and my family members became F2s and had to self-quarantine at home.

The quarantine period was also the time when the elections of deputies to the 15th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2021-2026 tenure entered the sprint period while the Covid-19 epidemic in Viet Yen district developed complicatedly. I used the relationships at the grassroots level from commune and village officials to mass organization members to build a network of collaborators.

One difficulty for me was that my husband was also on the frontline in the Covid-19 fight, and had not been home for more than a month. In order to focus on my work and prevent the pandemic, I decided to send my two young children to their grandparents to take care of. In difficulties, the collaborators have really accompanied me, serving as extended arms of the journalists and helping me complete the assigned tasks.

Reporter Dinh Cong Doanh (Culture - Society Department): Afraid to meet journalists for fear of… Covid-19

With the outbreak of the Covid-19 epidemic, the journalists’ work faced many difficulties. Due to professional characteristics, reporters had to go to many places and come into contact with many people, so every time we called to contact for work, they were very worried about being infected with ... Covid-19 from journalists.

At those times, I had to take advantage of every minute to arrange meetings, even during meal times and in the evening... On the other hand, travelling to targeted places was not easy, especially when many localities implemented social distancing. However, we always told ourselves to try to overcome difficulties and bring the fastest and most accurate information to our readers.
