Unique century-old lychee in Bac Ninh
BAC NINH - Visitors to Phuc Hoa commune in the northern province of Bac Ninh are flocking to see and take photo with a century-old lychee tree regarded as the original tree of the area’s famous early-ripening lychee region.
The tree, located in Thai Hoa village, is considered a cultural symbol and source of pride for generations of local residents.
According to local accounts, it was the first lychee tree planted in the commune and has consistently produced fruit every year.
Despite unfavorable weather conditions affecting harvests in many orchards this season, the tree remains heavily laden with fruit, with output estimated at 500-600 kg.
The entire harvest from the tree was auctioned to a business for 100 million VND (3,795 USD). Local authorities are taking efforts to preserve and promote the tree’s value in connection with eco-tourism, experiential tourism and the promotion of Phuc Hoa’s image.
Although adverse weather in 2026 reduced flowering and fruit-setting rates, Phuc Hoa commune has maintained 845 hectares of lychee cultivation, with total output expected to reach around 7,500 tonnes.
The commune currently has 25 export-certified growing area codes covering more than 800 hectares, supplying demanding markets including the United States, Japan, Australia and the European Union.
