Vietnam growth to be highest in ASEAN-5: IMF

Vietnam's GDP is set to grow by 3.8 percent this year, the highest rate among the five major Southeast Asian economies, the International Monetary Fund forecast.
Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Malaysia are likely to achieve growth of 3.5 percent or less.

Last year the four countries reported negative growth, while Vietnam grew at 2.9 percent.
Asia is set to grow by 6.5 percent, driven by India (10 percent against negative 7.3 percent last year) and China (8 percent against 2.3 percent last year).
The disruption of supply chains due to the resurgence of Covid-19 combined with price pressures and rising inflation would pose more challenges to growth, the IMF said.
It forecast growth of 5.9 percent for the global economy this year, down 0.1 percentage point from its July projection.
Vietnam’s exports of timber and timber products in the first seven months of 2021 were estimated at US$9.58 billion, up 55% over the same period in 2020, according to the General Department of Customs.

The Central Institute for Economic Management (CIEM) and the Australia Supports Economic Reform in Vietnam (Aus4Reform) on July 15 announced two economic growth scenarios for Vietnam this year.
According to General Statistic Office, in the first six months of 2021, total retail sales of goods and services went up 4.9% compared to the same period in 2020 to VND2,463.8 trillion (over US$107 billion), of which goods retail revenue hit VND1,985.4 trillion, up 6.2%.
The Ministry of Planning and Investment (MoPI) has devised two growth scenarios for the second half of 2021, said Deputy Minister Tran Quoc Phuong.
