Vietnam's top badminton player Nguyen Thuy Linh reaches career-high world ranking
Nguyen Thuy Linh, Vietnam’s top female badminton player, has achieved a new milestone by reaching world number 18 in the latest BWF rankings, her highest position to date.
The 27-year-old rose two places from number 20, surpassing Denmark's Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt and Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan, whose ranking points dropped due to recent performances.

Linh achieved this new peak without playing in the Japan Open last week or the China Open this week, according to Badminton World Federation (BWF) ranking update this month.
With 49,550 accumulated ranking points, she now trails India’s Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, world number 15, by just 2,684 points, putting a spot in the top 15 within reach.
Over the past 52 weeks, Linh has competed in 17 international tournaments, with her 10 highest-scoring events contributing significantly to her rise in the world rankings.
These include the 2025 Canada Open and German Open, where she earned 5,950 points each; the 2025 Malaysia Masters and Indonesia Masters, both yielding 5,040 points; the 2025 Malaysia Open with 4,800 points; the 2024 Hylo Open with 3,850 points; the 2024 Denmark Open with 4,320 points; the 2024 China Open with 5,400 points; the 2024 Vietnam Open with 5,500 points; and the 2024 Paris Olympics, which earned her 3,700 points.
However, as she did not compete in the 2025 China Open, Linh will soon lose the 5,400 points she earned from last year’s edition, which will increase the challenge of maintaining a high ranking for her.
Following her runner-up finish at the 2025 Canada Open, Linh has returned to training in Bac Ninh. She will join teammates Vu Thi Trang, Nguyen Hai Dang and Le Duc Phat at the 2025 BWF World Championships in France from Aug. 25-31. A good result there could propel her into the world’s top 15.
