Bac Ninh seeks to raise quality, expand lychee markets

Updated: 17:03, 26/08/2025

BAC NINH – The northern province of Bac Ninh is targeting higher quality standards and wider market access for local lychee crop after a bumper 2025 season, provincial leaders said at a review conference on August 25.

The conference, chaired by Pham Van Thinh, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee (PPC) and head of the provincial National Assembly delegation, assessed the results of lychee production and consumption in 2025 and set out tasks for 2026.

PPC Vice Chairman Pham Van Thinh speaks at the event.

Bac Ninh remained the country’s largest lychee producer with 29,700 hectares under cultivation, including 8,000 hectares of early-harvest lychees and 21,700 hectares of the main season crop. Output exceeded 205,000 tonnes, a sharp increase from last year.

More farms adopted VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards, and Bac Ninh lychees were exported to high-demand markets such as Europe and the United States, appearing on the shelves of supermarket chains like Safeway, Costco, Selgros and Rungis Market.

Provincial authorities intensified trade promotion, holding a major conference on lychee and other key farm products that brought together government ministries, businesses and leading distributors.

For the first time, provincial leader livestreamed online sales to promote the fruit, opened stores on e-commerce platforms, and organized “Bac Ninh Lychee Week” events in Hanoi and local industrial zones. The program “Bac Ninh Lychee – Vietnamese farm produce reaching the world” was launched in selected overseas markets.

Officials said coordination across political and business sectors was critical in boosting sales, alongside strict adherence to the principle that “quality is key.” The province has expanded high-standard farming zones, applied digital technology for production and traceability, and improved post-harvest preservation.

It has also strengthened links with border provinces such as Guangxi and Yunnan in China to facilitate exports while diversifying markets and sales channels, including social media and platforms like Voso, Postmart, Lazada and Amazon.

Delegates at the conference discussed solutions to expand exports, boost domestic sales, and promote safe farming practices.

The PPC Vice Chairman Thinh acknowledged shortcomings in 2025, including limited processing and preservation capacity, weak performance in formal export channels, and insufficient negotiating and contracting skills among local enterprises and cooperatives.

Vice Chairwoman of the provincial People’s Council Lam Thi Huong Thanh presents Certificates of Merit from the PPC Chairman to individuals for their outstanding achievements.

He called for decisive measures in 2026, including stricter pesticide control, piloting tree-level traceability systems, and establishing large-scale drying facilities. Longer term, the province aims to build an industrial cluster dedicated to agricultural processing and machinery.

He also urged efforts to tap major markets in the United States, Europe, Japan and Australia, where demand is strong, while promoting agro-tourism in lychee-growing areas. Infrastructure improvements, such as upgrades to National Highway 31, were highlighted as necessary to ensure smooth transport during peak harvest.

At the event, 13 organizations and 33 individuals were awarded certificates of merit for their contributions to lychee consumption in 2025.
