Vitality of fish breeding along Cau River

Updated: 20:34, 11/05/2019
(BGO) - Going along the Cau River to the communes along the dyke of Yen Dung district in Bac Giang province, we will see the development of fish farming. If before, people only relied on the water to catch fish on the river, now many households bravely invest in fish farming in low land areas. Particularly, Dong Phuc commune has five aquaculture cooperatives with nearly 60 ha of fish farming areas, bringing a good income for households.

Knowing exactly the weight of fish in the pond

I know Pham Van Tap in Bac Son village through the introduction of Vice Chairman of the Dong Phuc commune People's Committee Dang Dinh Don as the number 1 in the area in term of fish breeding with over 20 years of experience.

Pham Van Tap in Bac Son village has many years of experience in fish farming.

Since 1996, he has bravely accepted bid for more than 4 sao (each sao = 360sq.m) of the lowest land in the village, and then invested a large amount of money in renovating the area and building brick walls around it.

At that time, many people said that he had some problems in his mind but some others said that maybe he keeps up with the times and go ahead of everyone. Now, the whole village and commune admitted that he is really abreast of the times.

Every time the fish is harvested, cars of traders park at the edge of the pond, bringing each fish of up to 5 kilograms to their cars so that everyone sees it admiringly.

Every time he releases the fish, he counts the number of fries of each species. In addition to ensuring the density of fish in the pond that helps adjust and utilize the food layers, it also aims to calculate the number of fish in the pond, helping traders know fish supply.

Due to being cared with a separate process and guaranteed food, the quality of fish is good, traders always order in advance with higher prices. For example, last harvest, he sold carp for 60,000 VND (2.5 USD) per kg. On average each year, after deducting costs, he earns nearly 80 million VND (3,448 USD) in profit from 4 sao of pond.

Establishing cooperatives to facilitate production

Dong Phuc commune has zoned off nearly 60 hectares of water surface for aquaculture. From small models with low profit, many large-scale and high-profit aquatic farms have appeared.

From only exploiting and small-scale farming, so far, five aquaculture cooperatives have been formed with the participation of nearly 50 members.

Tran Van Ba, Director of the Thang Loi Cooperative, said: “It was very arduous to get it as today. In the past, this low-lying area was formed by taking soil to embank dykes and few people paid attention to it. They only planted lotus or rice for one crop. Later each household accepted bid for about 1 hectare to raise fish. However, the irrigation system has not been improved while farmers mainly raise fish under the method of extensive culture, with low efficiency”.

When fish farmers in Dong Phuc faced a lot of difficulties and thought they had to give up breeding, the Division of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Sub-department of Fisheries and the Cooperative Alliance of the district sent officers to learn about the situation and help establish a cooperative, step by step developing fish farming.

The households of Ba, Minh, Chuc, Nam, Sanh and Quang continued to make efforts to develop their industry.

Until now, the cooperative has been in operation for 7 years with 11 members, covering a total farming area of 11 hectares. In 2018, commercial fish production reached 136 tonnes, earning more than 3.5 billion VND, many times higher than growing rice and lotus.

Learning the farming method of the Thang Loi Cooperative, now farmers in Dong Phuc commune have bravely linked with each other and set up four more cooperatives, including Hoang Phuc, Cao Dong, Dong Nhan and Viet Thang.

Many technical advances in fish farming have been applied while devices such as oxygen generators and pond environmental indicators have also been used effectively by farmers.

Looking forward to linkages to ensure stable sales

With the establishment of the Thang Loi Cooperative, Director Ba had the opportunity to visit Thailand, Japan, Singapore and Malaysia to learn from these countries’ experience.

The sale of fish in Dong Phuc is unstable, with no linkage in product consumption. The fish is mainly bought by traders who then sell the product in the market.

“In Vietnam, kitchens in industrial zones consume food according to the bidding method. Anyone who offers cheap prices will win the bid so it is very difficult for us to compete. But the cooperative members still encourage each other to operate the cooperative well, with a belief that later when the State tightens the management of food origin, the cooperative will have many development opportunities ”- Director Tran Van Ba affirmed.
