World's largest cave Son Doong featured on CBS's '60 Minutes' program

Updated: 15:28, 30/03/2026

A documentary on Son Doong Cave in central Vietnam was aired Sunday on CBS's "60 Minutes," one of the U.S.'s longest-running television news programs, reinforcing Vietnam's standing as a global travel destination.

The documentary retraces the multi-year exploration of the world's largest cave in Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park in Quang Tri Province by the British Cave Research Association, from initial surveys to detailed scientific studies.

By integrating scientific, historical, and human perspectives, the film presents a comprehensive story of Son Doong to international audiences.

Le Minh Tuan, director of the Quang Tri Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said the broadcast is a great opportunity to promote the province's tourism image to international friends.

The feature not only highlights the site's global significance but also creates opportunities to attract higher-spending international visitors, Tuan said, as quoted by Vietnam News Agency.

The province plans to leverage the program's media exposure to strengthen promotion efforts while continuing to develop distinctive tourism products linked to natural conservation, aiming to ensure sustainable development, he added.

The filming trip from Jan. 14 to 17 was organized in coordination with Oxalis Adventure, the only company to operate tours to Son Doong, and involved a nine-member team including producers Nicole Young and Jonathan Partridge, correspondent Scott Pelley, and renowned photographer Ryan Deboodt.

Son Doong was discovered in 1990 by local man Ho Khanh, who accompanied British cave experts in further explorations that helped establish the cave as the largest in the world with a volume of more than 38 million cubic meters.

Son Doong opened to tourists in 2013. Its expedition is one of the adventure tours that attract the most international tourists in Vietnam.
