ASEAN builds standards for organic products

The ASEAN Organic Federation, grouping Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand, has built a common standard for organic products, according to the Vietnam Trade Office in Thailand.

The standard was introduced at the Biofach Southeast Asia 2019 and Natural Expo Southeast Asia 2019 held from July 11-14 in Nonthaburi province, Thailand.

It integrates common organic product standards for livestock, agricultural and processed food, thus contributing to a more efficient supply chain management and reducing production costs for ASEAN member countries.

The area of organic agricultural land in ASEAN is almost 4,800 hectares with an organic farming market worth around US$100 million. Of which, US$29.1 million comes from domestic consumption and US$67.9 million from exports.

The global organic agriculture market is now worth US$104 billion with an annual growth rate of 20% on average. The US is the biggest organic market with a value of US$45.2 billion, followed by Germany at US$10.04 billion.
