Car explosion kills driver in HCMC

A man has died after suffering severe burns as the car he was in exploded in HCMC's Cu Chi District.

Nguyen Van Phu, 38, died after being hospitalized unconscious with severe burns Friday afternoon, his family said Saturday.

Phu was stopping the car in a garden along the road, with several houses nearby, when the explosion happened. It was strong enough to deform the vehicle, tear its back apart, and burn down the seats. Tremors were felt by peope living dozens of meters away.

Huong, who lives around 30 m from the site, said: "The explosion was like a bomb."

When she rushed out to see what happened, the driver was unconscious and his seat was burning, she said.

Debris was found dozens of meters away on the ground, and up on trees.

Local residents put out the fire and took the driver to hospital, but he succumbed to injuries the same night.

Phu was survived by his wife and two children.

His family said he was a driver of Cu Chi District Public Services Ltd. for the past five years.

He had driven the company's leaders and staff on Friday morning as part of his job.

He took the car, which belonged to the company, for gasoline refill, on the afternoon and was nearly 100 m from home when the explosion happened.

Police only finished inspecting the scene at 4 p.m. Saturday.
