Effective exploitation of collective trademarks
Preserving the trademarks and improving product values
A collective trademark is owned by a group. Members of such group can use the trademark to promote their products. By the end of 2023, there have been 85 products in the entire province registered for protection of collective trademarks. Of which, Luc Ngan district led the list with 23 products owned by the district Farmers’ Association and cooperatives.

According to Nguyen Duc Quan, Chairman of the Farmers’ Association of Luc Ngan district, the district Farmers’ Association is the owner of the products like Luc Ngan pomelo, jujube, longan, goat, buffalo, cow, horse and chicken. The members and farmers who meet the criteria in accordance with the regulation can use the collective trademark for their products and they must preserve, exploit and develop the products.
For example, Phi Dien Agricultural Production, Trade and Service Cooperative (in Luc Ngan district) has used the collective trademark of Phi Dien jujube owned by the district Farmers’ Association since 2022. After the product became popular, it has seen smooth consumption with expanded market to southern Vietnam. Thanks to the good care and investment, the jujube quality has been improved year on year. Particularly, Phi Dien jujube was rated 3-star COOP product in 2022 and honoured as a typical agricultural product of the province in 2023.
Besides, the Cooperative is piloting drying jujube with freeze dryer for intensive processing to improve the product value. This is a way to make it different from other jujube growers in the locality. The provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Center for Industrial Encouragement and Trade Promotion and Farmers’ Association funded over 130 million VND (some 5,300 USD) for the Cooperative to print package and label in 2023.
Tan Yen district has 9 products granted collective trademark certification. After being certificated collective trademark, the products have been expanded production scale with stable market and increased value.
“Accelerant” from the levels and sectors
Annually, the district-level people’s committees and related agencies communicate to raise awareness of the identities about benefits and value of using collective trademark for local products, manage use of the trademarks, timely detect, warn and handle violations in management and use of collective trademarks, support fund to print package and label, expand material areas, instruct and support trademark registration.
6 products in the entire province were completed documentation awaiting for issuance of collective trademark certification in 2023. The provincial Department of Science and Technology will continue guiding registration for collective trademark certification of Lien Chung soya source (Tan Yen district) and Yen Dinh Khau nhuc (steamed pork belly) (Son Dong district).
The Department of Science and Technology has approved a number of scientific and technological tasks to build and promote values of the products after certification. Particularly, the Department approved the scientific project “Applying bio-products in pilot production and processing of guava tea bag from guava bud at Quyen Phong Agricultural Cooperative” by the Agricultural Technical Service Center of Tan Yen district in 2023.
By the project, one model applying bio-technology for production of guava and guava bud at a scale of 10 hectares in Cao Thuong town and Phuc Hoa commune (Tan Yen district) was established. The guava tea bag has been rated a 3-star OCOP product. The Cooperative has supplied more than 7,000 tea boxes to the market. It will continue to expand the production area under VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards and boost intensive processing in coming time.
In order to improve product values from the collective trademarks, producers should strengthen linkage to develop the products under value chains, ensure the product traceability and quality, pay attention to application of science and technology to improve productivity and quality and make good use of the support from the levels and sectors to promote the trademarks, according to Director of the Department of Science and Technology Nguyen Thanh Binh.
