Embroidery threads preserve Dao heritage in Tay Yen Tu highlands

Updated: 11:20, 05/07/2026

BAC NINH – Deep in the forests of the Tay Yen Tu range, the traditional attire of the Thanh Phan Dao ethnic group serves not only as a cultural symbol but also as a distinctive marker of community identity preserved through generations.

Creating a complete traditional outfit requires painstaking craftsmanship. Dao women dye fabric with indigo, cut and sew garments, embroider intricate patterns and add decorative details. From an early age, girls learn every stitch from their mothers and grandmothers, ensuring that embroidery remains both a practical skill and a means of safeguarding the ethnic group's cultural heritage.

The Dao community continues to preserve its traditional embroidery despite changing lifestyles.

An embroidered headscarf decorated with colorful wool tassels creates the elegant appearance of Thanh Phan Dao women.

The distinctive feature of Thanh Phan Dao attire lies in its embroidered patterns on black indigo-dyed fabric.

Traditional Dao costumes stand out against the forests of the Tay Yen Tu mountains.

Every stitch enhances the beauty of the costumes while helping preserve the cultural identity and heritage of the Dao people.
