Export of lychee: strict management of planting area and packaging facility codes
BAC NINH- The importing markets, especially China, are tightening control on origin traceability, pesticide residue and packaging conditions for imported agricultural products. Facing increasingly strict requirements, Bac Ninh province has fostered standardization of planting area and packaging facility codes to ensure stable export of lychee.
Importing countries are tightening inspections of planing area and packing facility codes to better control production processes, use of pesticides, pest monitoring and post-harvest handling conditions. Many markets are also continuously updating regulations on pesticide residue, production records and product traceability.

Particularly, China, the biggest consumer of the province’s lychee, is tightening online inspection and sudden inspection over planting areas and packaging facilities.
The province currently has 315 certified planting area codes serving export covering 17,769.22 hectares for agricultural products such as lychee, longan, pomelo, watermelon, star apple, bananas and herbs.
Lychee alone owns 243 planting area codes approved for export to China, the United States, Japan, Australia, Thailand and EU and 42 packing facilities serving export.

According to Nguyen Duc Hung, Director of Global Food Import and Export Joint Stock Company, China has been the major market for years, which accounts for over 70 percent of the province’s lychee export volume.
Not only China, other markets like EU, Japan and US are tightening regulations on pesticide residues and food safety standards. In response, many businesses have proactively strengthened control over raw material areas, cultivation processes and pre-processing and packaging systems.
Besides, many households have changed their production methods to meet criteria for export.
Facing increasingly difficult requirements of the market, the agricultural sector has identified strict management of planting area and packing facility codes as a key task to safeguard the reputation and brand of lychee, according to Vice Director of the Agriculture and Environment Department Nguyen Hong Quang.
The Agriculture and Environment Department inspected all lychee planting area and packaging facility codes in February and March.

Upon the inspections, competent authorities revoked 8 planting area codes covering 1,128.15 hectares and 2 packing facilities due to crop conversion or at the owners’ request.
Besides, 1 growing area code covering 18.17 hectares and 1 packing facility were also suspended at the owners’ request.
Currently, the conversion of planting area and packaging facility codes into a new format is underway and expected to be completed before June 15, 2026.
Once finalization, the data will be updated to the National Database System and shared with importing countries for traceability and monitoring purposes.
