Export expansion boosts value of Bac Ninh pomelos

Updated: 15:43, 17/04/2026

BAC NINH - The signing of a phytosanitary protocol for the export of pomelos and lemons to China, during a state visit by Party General Secretary and President To Lam, is opening up major opportunities for fruit sector in Vietnam in general and in Bac Ninh province in particular.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, China is a vast fruit consumption market with steadily rising demand. The official opening of the market to Vietnamese pomelos and lemons is expected to diversify export destinations while encouraging more professional and sustainable production.

Provincial leaders from the People’s Committee and relevant departments of Bac Ninh visit a model pomelo orchard in Chu ward.

For Bac Ninh, where fruit cultivation is expanding rapidly, the move presents a clear opportunity to restructure agriculture towards higher value.

The province currently has nearly 54,000 hectares of fruit trees, including more than 8,600 hectares of citrus, with total output exceeding 80,000 tonnes and an estimated value of about 1.8 trillion VND (68.3 million USD).

Pomelos alone account for over 3,700 hectares meeting VietGAP standards, mainly concentrated in areas of the former Luc Ngan district, providing a solid foundation for export participation.

The protocol sets out strict technical requirements from cultivation areas to packaging facilities, including the application of good agricultural practices (GAP), integrated pest management (IPM), pre-harvest fruit bagging and pest control measures.

While posing challenges, these standards are also expected to act as a filter to improve product quality. Meeting them would enable Bac Ninh pomelos not only to enter the Chinese market but also to access other demanding markets.

Bac Ninh province is rapidly expanding the cultivation area of pomelos grown under VietGAP standards.

Experience shows that many Vietnamese agricultural products have expanded market share and increased value after gaining official access to China.

With advantages in quality, stable output and a relatively large VietGAP-certified area, Bac Ninh pomelos are expected to capitalise on this opportunity to raise added value and improve farmers’ incomes.

In the coming period, training, standardisation of growing areas, development of cultivation area codes and packaging facilities, as well as stronger linkages among farmers, cooperatives and enterprises, will be key.

If implemented effectively, pomelos could become a high-value export product and a driver of sustainable agricultural growth in the province.
