Ensuring water quality

In the past, water supply facilities were built for a long time and became degraded, partly affecting the quality of water resources. In early 2019, the water supply system of Thang township (Hiep Hoa district) received 27 billion VND (1.16 million USD) in aid from the WB capital under the RB-SupRSWS Programme. Accordingly, the system has been repaired and upgraded to have its capacity increasing from 200 cu.m to 400 cu.m per day.

Than Duc Thanh, Deputy Director of the Hiep Hoa Water Supply Joint Stock Company, which manages the system, said benefiting from the programme, the unit upgraded the existing works, helping people in the region limit the use of unguaranteed water from drilled wells. Now, besides the township, all people in six communes: Thai Son, Ngoc Son, Hoang Van, Hoang An, Hung Son and Hoa Son have clean water.

Currently, Hiep Hoa district has clean water facilities invested from the WB capital which are operating effectively such as those in Thang township and Xuan Cam commune. The facility in Mai Dinh commune is being maintained. These works have contributed to increasing the rate of people in the district using clean water to 90 percent.

Similarly, the concentrated domestic water facility of the Clean Water Treatment Station in Cau Go township (Yen The district) managed by the World Community Development Joint Stock Company was put into use in 2008 with a capacity of 450 cu.m per day and night, supplying water to 900 households in the township and part of Tam Hiep, Phon Xuong and Dong Tam communes.

In January 2019, the unit put into operation a new system which provides water for Tam Hiep, Dong Tam and Phon Xuong communes with 500 households. Households using clean water did not pay for installing new meters.

The remaining districts also benefited from the WB capital to build and upgrade water supply works for people. This not only contributes to improving water quality and meeting daily needs of people but also is a basis for localities to effectively implement the criteria in the national target programme on new-style rural building. Since 2016, the programme has helped more than 7,000 households use clean water to serve their lives.

Expanding the programme

Bac Giang is one of 21 provinces benefiting from the “Results-based Scaling-up Rural Sanitation and Water Supply” Programme. The programme consists of three components. The Centre for Rural Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation (the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development) undertakes Component 1 on "Rural Water Supply", which is implemented in 50 communes and townships in districts across the province.

The Clean Water Treatment Station in Cau Go township (Yen The district) has been expanded using WB capital.

To implement the programme effectively, right from the beginning, the centre has organized many sessions to disseminate knowledge to the people about the benefits of using clean water to public health, ensuring environmental hygiene and improving the quality of life.

The provincial People's Committee has issued documents requesting localities and enterprises to actively coordinate with and create conditions for investors to carry out projects to develop water supply networks...

Some facilities, once becoming operational, provide free water in the initial time for people in order to help households change their awareness of using hygienic water sources in daily activities.

Implementing the programme, in 2019, the province is building, repairing and upgrading nine water supply works in 19 communes in Luc Ngan, Hiep Hoa, Yen The, Luc Nam, Luc Ngan and Son Dong districts, with a total cost of over 125 billion VND (5.4 million USD). It strives to have over 95 percent of rural people using clean water by 2020.

This project is included in the community support program of LDSC, a nong-governmental organization.
