Male student Nguyen Van Phu overcomes obstacles to pursue passion

Updated: 11:22, 13/06/2020
(BGO) - Speaking of students who love and excel in Literature, we often assume that they are girls. But at the Bac Giang High School for Gifted Students, Nguyen Van Phu  – an 11th grader specializing in Literature is a male student with a love of literary. That has surprised many people.

Born into a family where both parents are workers in a poor rural area of Phuc Son commune (Tan Yen district), Phu has overcome many difficulties and obstacles to pursue the love of his subject. Phu confided: “Since I started to pursue Literature when I was in Grade 5, there have been a lot of advice, suggestions and even discouragements from relatives to friends when they know I pursue this subject".

Male student Nguyen Van Phu.

Going against the majority is not easy, but Nguyen Van Phu did not give up. He patiently convinced his family, studied hard, and conquered everything with all of his passion to show that his choice is right. And he "alone" overcome difficulties during his secondary school time, becoming the only male student to enter the Literature class K28 of the Bac Giang High School for Gifted Students.

Since becoming a student specialising in Literature, Phu has had more and more motivation to strive and pursue his favorite subject. To reach school, he has to take two bus trips for a distance of 30km, excluding nearly 2km on foot. As the only male student in a class filled with girls, he has to accept the gaze of many people every day.

Saving scholarship money after each monthly exam to buy self-study books, whenever facing a difficult lesson, he proactively asks teachers and exchanges with friends... Phu has fostered knowledge by himself every day with such diligence and patience! He thinks that each essay he writes is one time he speaks out his voice about literature and life. Therefore, it is necessary to write so emotionally and creatively. Literature, for Phu, is really a way of "eliminating hunger, reducing poverty" for the soul and mind!

"As a boy, you are not suitable for studying Literature", "You should study natural science subjects to have many opportunities to choose a career in the futute...". Going against the majority is not easy, but Nguyen Van Phu did not give up. He patiently convinced his family, studied hard, and conquered everything with all of his passion to show that his choice is right.

Nguyen Van Phu's passion and efforts in learning have helped him achieve many excellent academic achievements. Phu has been a well-rounded student from Grade 1 until now. He is also the owner of dozens of first and second prizes in the competitions for excellent students in Literature at all levels.

In Grade 10, he won silver medals in both the Contest for Excellent Students in the Coastal and Northern Delta Region and the Hung Vuong Summer Camp. In Grade 11, he was the only male student in the Literature team of Bac Giang province to take the National Exam for Excellent Students and also the member who achieved the best result, winning the second prize.

Not satisfied with what achieved, Phu still endeavors to study every day to conquer the goals ahead. Talking about the student Nguyen Van Phu, teacher Pham Thi Thanh Binh, who directly teaches him in Literature, said: “Phu is a gentle, profound and capable student who has a special passion for Literature. He has inspired not only his friends but also his teachers.”
