"Miss Tam" in the highlands

Updated: 11:10, 18/09/2023
BAC GIANG - For years, although each person has different jobs and circumstances, members of the Son Dong Volunteer Association (SDVA) have actively joined hands to support the impoverished in society. They are like "Miss Tam" (a girl in Vietnamese Fairy Tale with good characteristic) in this highland district that still has many hardships.

Self- promises

On the National Day holiday of September 2, Nguyen Thi Nga (born in 1961), Head of SDVA (under the Provincial Association in Support of Handicapped and Orphans) and other members still prepared ingredients for the humanitarian porridge pot the next morning.

The Association is divided into 5 groups, each taking turns to prepare the humanitarian porridge pot on every Thursday morning. Everyone is happy to do something meaningful.

The free porridge offering has been launched since 2008 by Nga and her husband. In 2016, many people asked to join then they founded the Volunteer Group with Nga as the group leader. In 2021, her husband unfortunately got accident leading to paralysis, but she still operates this meaningful work.

In 2007, she knew that she had cervical cancer. When she was treated at Central K Hospital, she received warm nutritious porridge meals from the charity group. Truly touched by those noble gestures, Nga promised herself that in the future if she was still healthy and returned home, she would cook and offer porridge for patients at the District General Hospital. And that is the reason for her good deed.

In late March 2023, Nga wrote on her personal Facebook: "Cancer patients lose all their hair after receiving chemotherapy. To help them have more faith and positive thoughts in life, please donate your hair bun to those unfortunate enough to suffer from this dangerous disease”.

The lines of confidence stemming from the kindness of a person who is also suffering from cancer have touched many hearts near and far. Many women, even children, have voluntarily cut and donate their hair.

To date, Nga and other members have gathered 20 buns of hair then donated to patients at K3 Tan Trieu Hospital in the first period. They plans second donation to patient at K Central Hospital in this October

Giving is forever

The day we went to Son Dong was also the time when Nga and the members of the Association completed raising money to support poor students at Sung Tra Ethnic Secondary Boarding School in Meo Vac district (Ha Giang province) with a total amount of 6.5 million VND. This is their annual volunteer activity before a new school year.

“I always think that when you give something, it lasts forever. Therefore, if you do many good deeds, joy will surely come. In society, there are still many unhappy people that need sharing and help,” Nga expressed.

Based on the former Volunteer group, in 2020, Son Dong Volunteer Association was established, directly under Provincial Association in Support of Handicapped and Orphans. It has nearly 60 members at all ages and from various fields of life, including 45 members in Son Dong district, 6 in Luc Ngan, 5 in Bac Giang city and 1 in each locality of Luc Nam, Tan Yen, Thai Nguyen city (Thai Nguyen province).

To have funds for operation, every month, members contribute an amount of money to the common fund to serve annual and periodic activities. Besides, when there is an unexpected donation, group members donate more as well as encourage philanthropists to participate.

Since 2008, the Association has offered tens of thousands of free porridge meals to patients at the District General Hospital; supported hundreds of millions of dong along with many school supplies, clothes, blankets, building charity houses... for disadvantaged students and needy cases inside and outside the province.

Particularly, the Association is now sponsoring 6 students in difficult circumstances, orphaned of both parents in Son Dong district, 3 of whom with the most difficult circumstances receive additional support from Nga.

With these meaningful deeds, they are called "Miss Tam" in the Son Dong highlands. Nga and the Son Dong Volunteer Association were awarded many Certificates of Merit by the Vietnam and Provincial Association in Support of Handicapped and Orphans as well as Son Dong district for their achievements in charity work.
