Preserving traditions, spreading national pride

Updated: 16:11, 14/07/2025

The project “Youth participation in preserving and promoting Vietnamese national cultural identity 2024–2029” aims to highlight the role of young people in countering harmful cultural trends, safeguarding traditions, and spreading the spirit of national pride.

One of the key tasks set out in the 9th National Congress Resolution of the Viet Nam Youth Federation is to develop the project “Youth participation in preserving and promoting Vietnamese national cultural identity 2024–2029”.

Students from Can Chu Phin Village (former Ha Giang Province) take part in a flag-raising activity themed “Bringing traditional culture into schools.”

The draft proposes organising courses on cultural heritage and the arts; designing cultural experience programmes in schools; and encouraging young entrepreneurs to develop business models linked to the preservation of ethnic culture.

Notably, the draft project goes beyond organising annual activities and proposes support to build or renovate at least 200 community houses in villages and hamlets; implement 50 cultural identity models within the new-style rural development programme; and develop around 50 outstanding tourist spots in remote, culturally rich areas.

To meet the set goals, the Central Committee of the Viet Nam Youth Federation is actively collecting feedback on the draft from experts, researchers, policymakers, and exemplary youth representatives.

Many suggestions emphasise clarifying the youth’s leading role in cultural preservation; promoting their dynamism alongside technological strengths; and establishing effective coordination mechanisms between organisations, agencies, and communities.

According to Prof.Dr. Le Hong Ly, Chairman of the Viet Nam Folk Arts Association, it is essential first to equip young people with an awareness of national culture so they can participate effectively and creatively in preserving and promoting traditions, based on a solid knowledge foundation.

In parallel, there should be greater opportunities for youths to engage in reviving and restoring traditional crafts and cuisines in each locality, and more ambitiously, to launch start-ups tied to regional cultural identity.

Ngo Thi Thanh Mai, Deputy Head of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs, suggested building bridges to help young people abroad connect with their homeland through projects, programmes, and both in-person and online exchange events.

In a rapidly changing society, traditional culture faces major challenges, especially as increasing numbers become reliant on technology.

Preserving cultural identity should start with the youngest generation, from the simplest daily activities.

Therefore, the “Youth participation in preserving and promoting Vietnamese national cultural identity 2024–2029” project needs to focus on helping young people gain a proper understanding of the importance of traditional values, thereby guiding them to take the right actions to preserve and promote these traditions.
