Retailers boost online sales to increase revenue amid pandemic

Updated: 20:22, 15/07/2021
(BGO) - The Covid-19 epidemic has severely affected commercial and service activities in Bac Giang province. In the context of epidemic prevention and control, people have changed their shopping method from in-person to online. To meet this demand, retailers have defined digital transformation as a long-term strategy and an inevitable trend.
Boosting online sales

Over the past two months, the number of customers coming to buy goods directly at trading centers, supermarkets and retail stores in the province has decreased significantly. In contrast, the online shopping systems at these units have become bustling with positive growth.

People coming to buy goods directly at BigC Supermarket decrease sharply and instead they order online.

At BigC Bac Giang Supermarket, since May 2021, the number of offline customers has declined sharply and the average revenue reached 30-40 percent compared to the time before the pandemic, mainly coming from the online channel. A supermarket representative said that to meet the consumer demand amid the epidemic, the unit has promoted its multi-channel sales system (Omni system), Go! & Big C app, BigC account on Zalo and the hotline.

digital transformation in the retail industry is the change from traditional retail to digital retail. The digital transformation by retail systems in production and business is the right and effective direction.

In addition, BigC applies many forms of promotion to stimulate consumer demand when shopping online by offering discounts, gifts, and free shipping within a radius of 10 km for bills worth from 200,000 VND (8.73 USD) or more.

Similarly, Van Chien Electronics store system has also switched to online selling. In order to overcome difficulties in business, Van Chien Electronics has developed a digital transformation plan to develop online sales. Accordingly, each store of the unit recruits 2-3 more employees who are proficient in computers and smartphones to approach customers and sell goods online.

Companionship is needed

Tran Quang Tan, Director of the provincial Department of Industry and Trade, said that digital transformation in the retail industry is the change from traditional retail to digital retail. The digital transformation by retail systems in production and business is the right and effective direction.

Through this business method, the retail systems can reach customers quickly, improve the buying experience, increase customer satisfaction, improve competitiveness and reduce manpower. Currently, the province has six supermarkets and more than 3,000 retail stores. Most of them apply the online business method.

The department also supports retailers according to the province's e-commerce development plan for the 2019-2021 period. On that basis, each year, it assists 15-30 units, businesses and cooperatives in designing websites, Facebook fanpages and landing pages or opening booths on domestic and international e-commerce platforms.

Continuing to modernize the retail system in business, the provincial People's Committee has just issued a digital transformation plan for the 2021-2025 period, with a vision to 2030, focusing on developing the digital economy to improve competitiveness of the economy. The province strives to have all households covered with fiber optic network infrastructure and universalize 4G/5G mobile services. All people are expected to have e-payment accounts.

Tan added that in the coming time, the department will continue to coordinate with specialized units to study solutions to help retailers overcome shortcomings in the application of information technology in business. In the immediate future, it will focus on encouraging people and businesses to trade through digital platforms and propose removing difficulties in capital and human resources to create a modern and highly secure digital transformation environment and ecosystem for businesses.
