Vietnam number one badminton player returns to top 20 despite early exit at world championship
Despite a loss to China's Chen Yufei in the round of 16 at the 2025 Badminton World Championship, Vietnam's number one player Nguyen Thuy Linh has returned to the top 20 of global rankings.
In the latest round on Friday, Linh was unable to pull off an upset against the fourth seed Chen. The Vietnamese shuttler lost two quick sets, 10-21, 9-21, marking Vietnam's exit from the tournament with no athletes remaining.

Though Linh fell short of making history as the first Vietnamese woman to reach the quarterfinals of the World Championship, it was no surprise given Chen's formidable background. She is a former world number one and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic gold medalist in women's singles.
Linh's run at the tournament included a win over former world number one Ratchanok Intanon and Kirsty Gilmour before her loss to Chen.
Reaching the round of 16 earned her 6,000 BWF ranking points, which will boost her standing by about 3-4 places in the update next week, pushing her back into the top 20.
The BWF ranking is crucial, as it determines seeding at international tournaments. Linh's highest ranking to date is 18th, which she achieved on July 22, 2025. If Linh keeps her current form, she could set a new career-high ranking.
The World Championship is one of badminton's two premier events, alongside the Olympics, both awarding 14,500 points to the champion. This year's women's singles quarterfinals featured all seeded players in the top 16.
Vietnam has no athletes left in the tournament. Previously, Vu Thi Trang and the duo Nguyen Dinh Hoang and Tran Dinh Manh were eliminated in the second round, while Le Duc Phat and Nguyen Hai Dang exited the men's singles event in the first round.
