Vietnam's passport rises to 84th most powerful in the world

Updated: 10:33, 23/07/2025

Vietnam's passport has climbed seven spots since the beginning of the year to rank 84th globally, offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 51 out of 227 destinations, according to the Henley Passport Index released on July 22.

Vietnam now shares the same position with Bhutan, Jordan, and Liberia.

In January, the Vietnamese passport ranked 91st, despite granting access to the same number of destinations.

Singapore holds the title of the world's most powerful passport, allowing visa-free entry to 193 destinations, followed by Japan and South Korea.

Within Southeast Asia, Vietnam ranks above Laos (86th) and Myanmar (88th).

The five weakest passports belong to Pakistan, Yemen, Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan.

Christian H. Kaelin, chair of Henley & Partners, said the latest index highlights a growing competitiveness in global mobility.

"The consolidation we're seeing at the top underscores that access is earned and must be maintained through active and strategic diplomacy," he said in a statement. "Nations that proactively negotiate visa waivers and nurture reciprocal agreements continue to rise, while the opposite applies to those that are less engaged in such efforts."

The Henley Passport Index tracks global travel freedom across 227 countries and territories, using exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

It ranks 199 passports based on the number of destinations their holders can enter without obtaining a visa in advance. Updated regularly throughout the year to reflect changes in visa policies, the index is widely regarded as a key measure of global mobility.
