Vietnam top badminton player Nguyen Thuy Linh achieves career-highest world ranking

Updated: 09:26, 19/09/2025

Vietnam number one female tennis player, Nguyen Thuy Linh, has reached a new milestone in her career, climbing to world number 17 in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings.

The updated rankings, released on Thursday, show Linh has accumulated 48,630 points to rise from 18th, the position she held in the July 22 and Sept. 2 rankings.

Nguyen Thuy Linh celebrates a victory at the 2025 Vietnam Open.

Linh remains the only Vietnamese female tennis player in the world's top 100. Former national number one, Vu Thi Trang, dropped seven places, from 131st to 138th, with 12,430 points.

An Se-young of South Korea continues to hold the top spot globally with 111,270 points, followed by China’s Wang Zhi Yi with 106,862 points, and Han Yue, also from China, with 91,200 points.

In the men's singles, Nguyen Hai Dang, who recently reached the quarterfinals of the 2025 Vietnam Open this month, fell one spot to 63rd with 24,150 points.

Le Duc Phat, who was eliminated early at the Vietnam Open, dropped two places to 85th with 20,360 points. Due to limited international competition, veteran Nguyen Tien Minh is currently ranked 362nd with 3,630 points.

Linh, 28, started playing badminton professionally at the age of 14. In 2015, she won the national championship, and since 2018, she has been Vietnam's top female badminton player, with eight consecutive national championships.

Linh has also claimed the Vietnam Open title three times in a row since 2022. Additionally, she represented Vietnam at both the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2024 Paris Olympics.

At the 2025 Vietnam Open, Linh reached the final but was defeated by China's Cai Yanyan, ending her streak of victories at the tournament.

Recently, Linh withdrew from the China Masters due to injury and is expected to return home for treatment, which means she will also miss the Korea Open. She is likely to return to competition in October, with several European tournaments scheduled in Finland, Denmark, Germany and France.

Linh aims to gather points from these events to improve her ranking and secure a seeding place at the SEA Games 33. She has competed in five SEA Games but has won only one team bronze medal to date.
