Martin Kabaluapa Kapinga, Chief of Country Offices Division at the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), has presented a symbolic donation of 40,000 USD to support the central city of Da Nang's recovery efforts following the heavy rains and Typhoon Kalmaegi.

At a meeting with Vice Chairwoman of the People’s Committee of Da Nang Nguyen Thi Anh Thi on November 12, Kapinga extended his condolences over the losses caused by recent storms and floods to the people and authorities of the city.

He congratulated Da Nang on the recent merger of former Quang Nam province and Da Nang into the new Da Nang city, describing it as an opportunity to expand cooperation between the WWF and the locality in the fields of conservation and sustainable development.

The WWF delegation praised the efforts made by the city’s authorities and residents in protecting the environment and conserving nature in recent years, affirming that Da Nang has set an exemplary model for harmonising urban development with natural preservation.

Thi expressed her gratitude to the WWF for its concern, assistance, and recognition of Da Nang’s ongoing efforts in environmental and nature conservation.

She noted that the WWF is currently cooperating with the city’s Department of Agriculture and Environment to implement a forest restoration and livelihood development project in the former Quang Nam area, with total funding exceeding 8.1 million USD. WWF also plans to sponsor several new programmes and projects in the near future.

She called on the WWF to continue accompanying and supporting Da Nang in formulating its biodiversity strategy and action plan, improving financial mechanisms for conservation, managing natural heritage sites and wetlands, strengthening public communications and education, and applying science and technology in environmental protection.

Earlier, the WWF delegation conducted a field survey on Son Tra Peninsula and noted that the population of red-shanked douc langurs (Pygathrix nemaeus) there remains stable.

Vietnam recognises global support in post-typhoon recovery

Vietnam has appreciated the strong support and solidarity from international partners and diplomatic missions in helping local communities recover from the recent devastation caused by Typhoons Bualoi and Matmo, according to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Hoang Hiep.
