The festival commemorates the 142nd anniversary of the Yen The peasant uprising (1884 - 2026). During the festival, crowds of people gather at various historical sites across the commune.
The colourful festival flags and the sound of drums and gongs echo, creating a lively scene in the mountainous backdrop.
Traditional rituals, such as incense offerings and ceremonies at places like the Cau Khoai Temple, Dinh Thep Communal House, Leo Pagoda, Thong Pagoda, and the Hoang Hoa Tham Historical Site, are held solemnly.
These rituals express the people’s reverence for their ancestors, especially farmer hero Hoang Hoa Tham and his Yen The troops.
According to historical records, on March 16, 1884, leader Luong Van Nam (De Nam) and his soldiers performed the flag-raising ceremony at The Loc Communal House, officially launching the armed struggle against French colonialists.
Over the next eight years, De Nam built a stronghold in the mountains of Yen The, organising brilliant guerrilla tactics that repeatedly defeated French military campaigns.
After De Nam was killed in 1892, Hoang Hoa Tham (De Tham) took over the leadership, becoming the supreme commander and earning the nickname “The Gray Tiger of Yen The.”
Utilising the treacherous terrain, he led daring attacks that instilled fear in the French army. Historians consider the Yen The uprising to be the largest, most enduring, and most glorious peasant revolt against French colonialism before the founding of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
The heroic spirit of that era was revived during the festival in Phon Xuong. The opening ceremony of Yen The Festival Week on the evening of March 11, along with the commemoration of the 142nd anniversary of the Yen The peasant uprising on March 16, highlighted traditional cultural elements that made a deep impression on both locals and visitors.
One of the most popular activities was the traditional crossbow shooting competition held during the Cau Khoai Temple Festival.

Several grassroots sports competitions have been also held, including men’s and women’s football, badminton, pickleball, chess, and martial arts.
With its historical and cultural significance, the Yen The uprising sites, comprising 23 specially ranked national historical sites, have been recognised as a National Special Heritage. The Yen The Festival has also been included in the national intangible cultural heritage list.
