Bac Ninh awakens nighttime economy potential

Updated: 15:27, 06/11/2025

BAC NINH - Emerging as one of Vietnam’s leading industrial and investment hubs, the northern province of Bac Ninh is now looking to unlock the potential of its nighttime economy to sustain growth and enhance appeal as a modern urban center.

By mid-2025, the province had attracted more than 3,360 foreign-invested projects with total registered capital exceeding 47.6 billion USD.

Industrial zones such as Yen Phong, VSIP, Que Vo, Thuan Thanh, Tien Son, Quang Chau, Van Trung and Song Khe–Noi Hoang have drawn about 22,000 foreign specialists and technicians, alongside over 400,000 domestic workers. This large and stable population represents a steady consumer base for night-time services including dining, entertainment, shopping and leisure.

The appeal of Bac Ninh’s nighttime economy lies not only in commerce but also in its rich cultural identity. As the cradle of the Kinh Bac cultural region, Bac Ninh is home to numerous traditional craft villages such as Phu Lang pottery, Dong Ho folk paintings, Thu Duong noodles and Ke rice paper among others.

The cultural and art activities are performed on Tran Hung Dao street.

These heritage industries remain vibrant, offering opportunities for night tours, light festivals and cultural and culinary experiences that showcase local traditions.

To promote the night economy, Bac Ninh authorities have incorporated it into local development plans since 2021, designating zones and streets for evening commerce.

The Nguyen Cao night street, spanning Kinh Bac and Vo Cuong wards, has become the province’s first model for the nighttime economy, attracting hundreds of foreign residents, mostly Korean, Japanese and Chinese experts working in nearby industrial parks.

About 700 businesses along the street serve between 4,000 and 5,000 customers nightly, with weekend traffic surging up to 250%. The area generates annual commercial revenues of about 200 billion VND (7.8 million USD) and provides 500–600 direct jobs.

In Bac Giang ward, the Hung Vuong 1 food street has also emerged as a nighttime culinary destination for both foreign experts and local residents. Meanwhile, new clusters of restaurants and refreshment stalls have sprung up near the Song Thuong railway bridge, drawing crowds after dark.

Several wholesale markets in Bac Ninh operate exclusively at night, including Mia Market in Da Mai ward and Hoa Dinh Market in Vo Cuong ward. These hubs bustle with agricultural produce from across the country and imported fruit from China and Thailand.

Under its commercial and service development plan through 2030, Bac Ninh aims to establish at least three major nighttime economic zones and develop ten specialized streets, raising the trade and service sector’s share to 38–40% of the province’s GRDP.

Tran Van Thanh, Chairman of Bac Giang ward’s People’s Committee, said the locality has already zoned areas for nighttime development and attracted investment for a nearly 2-hectare project covering the Chua Thanh, Thanh Dinh and Thanh Non neighborhoods.

However, experts note that realizing Bac Ninh’s full potential requires strong investors with financial capacity and experience in developing urban night economies.

The province is also encouraged to introduce supportive mechanisms, including incentives for advertising, communications, and extended operating hours, to help businesses thrive after 10 p.m.

Local authorities are urged to back cultural, sports, and entertainment clubs that contribute to the vibrancy of the nighttime economy. Urban planning should begin with pilot models of “night streets” and “night districts,” supported by clear management frameworks and public-private partnerships.

By mobilizing social resources and attracting enterprises in the food, beverage, entertainment and tourism sectors, Bac Ninh aims to turn its evenings into a dynamic growth driver, reflecting both modern vitality and the enduring spirit of Kinh Bac culture.
